About The Wine

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s top wineries, led for the past 35 years by Iain Riggs. The estate produces a variety of wines from the classic varieties of Australia, none more notable than the Semillon. Hunter Valley doesn't always get a lot of recognition for the wines produced, but the variety that the region is most famous for is Semillon. When made in this region, Semillon evokes so much charm that it is competing for the top representation of the variety, even Bordeaux is keeping its metaphorical eye on Hunter Valley. When you combine one of the top producers with the top variety from a region you can rest assured that the wine produced will be top tier.

In a region considered relatively warm and subtropical, the presence of summer dominant rainfall, afternoon cloud cover, and weak sea breezes temper what could otherwise be a challenging climate for the production of quality table wine. In spite of this, the Hunter Valley has an impressive grape-growing history, with the first vineyards being planted in 1830. Unique in the world of wine, Hunter Semillon is crisp and austere in its youth, yet rewards with a bounty of nutty, creamed honey characters on a toasty palate with age.

Aging: 100% stainless steel fermentation and aging prior to bottling

Tasting Notes: Lovely florals and lemongrass aromas. Mouth-filling flavors of pear and lemon pith balancing the zesty acid backbone.

Reviews

Has a little bit extra to the fruit line. While still speaking to the classic lemon-accented aromas and flavors, there is an extra edge of lemon/passionfruit sorbet. The drinking window will remain open for as long as you wish. ~95 James Halliday

This delicate and slightly green-tinged Semillon is made by one of the Hunter’s most renowned estates. Fresh and youthful, it bounces with aromas of fresh flower blossoms, lemon, and lime leaf. In the mouth, Semillon’s typically waxy texture and citrus oil notes are tempered by crisp acidity. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
