About the Wine

Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil, the masterminds behind this wine, are synonymous with excellence and perfection. Savvy wine drinkers or wine aficionados have not only tasted their wines but love them! Adrianna and Alejandro are Old-World wines lovers, especially from Bordeaux. This style is clearly reflected in the 2017 Bodega Aleanna 'El Enemigo' Cabernet Franc Argentina. This Cab Franc delivers deep peppery aromas, grainy tannins, and freshness.

Within Mendoza, you will find a hidden gem, the place James Suckling refers to as “Mendoza’s Montrachet”, known locally as Gualtallary. Gualtallary is one of the highest points in the entire country and today, it is one of the most acclaimed regions in the world! 100% of the grapes of 2017 Aleanna 'El Enemigo' Cabernet Franc Argentina come from this region.

The wines of El Enemigo are a tribute to those internal battles that make us who we are. Year in and year out, the wines of Bodega Aleanna are heralded amongst the best wines of Argentina. With the 2017 Bodega Aleanna 'El Enemigo' Cabernet Franc Argentina, Vigil, and Catena are able to capture the finest expression of terroir delivering unprecedented excellence with a style of wine that pays tribute to the old Pomerol style.

If you recognize the name, then you know this is also the winemaker for Catena Zapata, one of the preeminent wineries in Argentina. This project was launched with Adrianna Catena in 2007.

Aging: 16 months in French oak barrels, 20% New.

Tasting notes: 92% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec. This Cabernet Franc is ruby red in color with soft violet tones. The nose has intense aromas and concentrated notes of cassis, ripe currants, and sweet spices including black pepper and cloves. His tenure provides integrated oak notes of cedar and vanilla. Fresh impact and excellent structure on the palate, reminiscent of ripe red fruits with hints of eucalyptus and tagged black pepper. This wine has an excellent balance and elegance with a well-structured, persistent finish. Pair this wine with grilled game meats and empanadas.

Reviews

“Made “like a flan”, according to Ale Vigil, this is a co-fermented blend of Cabernet Franc and 8% Malbec, with lots of whole bunches and aged in old wooden foudres. Zesty and fresh, with the low alcohol and focus that are a feature of the El Enemigo style, it’s savory and bright with salty minerality and graphite and green herb flavors.” ~95 Tim Atkin.

“This is such a delicious cabernet franc with blackberry and floral notes on the nose and palate, which draw you in and invite you to drink. Medium body. Round, creamy tannins and a delicious finish. The use of whole berries really makes this.” ~93 James Suckling.

“The expressive and elegant 2017 El Enemigo Cabernet Franc has some 8% Malbec in the blend. It's a subtle red with nuance and detail, very harmonious, aromatic, even floral within the spicy character of the variety. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins are very fine and there's moderate alcohol and very good freshness and harmony. This matured in oak foudres for some 15 months.” ~93 Robert Parker.

~93 Descorchados

“Harvested in stages in Gualtallary over a five-week period, this Cabernet Franc with 8% Malbec, aged in foudres, is a grand statement about the virtues of the variety. Sweet and sour cherries dominate a nose that reveals light hints of pyrazine, but are then overtaken in the glass by black currant. An open wine with a juicy palate, firm structure and polished tannins, presenting an engaging character and a long, fruity finish.”~92 Vinous.
