About the Wine

"If you ever wanted a Brunello for your cellar, buy the 2016 vintage." We suggest you take James Suckling's advice and buy this wine.

Founded in 1996, Poggio Nardone shares a border with the Mocali estate in the region of Tavernelle of Montalcino. Although the Ciacci family had owned the property for some time, it was not until Tiziano and Alessandra, then newlyweds were looking through some old manuscripts that they were able to determine the original boundaries of what had once been a much larger Montalcino vineyard, the majority of which had been overgrown. Since then, they have made it their mission to restore the property to its former glory, using as a guide the notations made by Alessandra’s grandfather of the best planting areas. The estate is modest in size (less than 10 hectares) and its location is ideal, with the combination of high-altitude vineyards (approximately 450 meters in elevation) and compact marl and limestone soils. The resulting wines are dense, long-lived reds that can be shy in their youth, but are well worth cellaring.

The vineyards are exposed to the South / West of the Montalcino hill at an altitude of 350 meters, alternating with oak, holm oak, and strawberry trees, characteristic of the natural vegetation of the place, the soil is largely composed of marl and alberese and therefore rich in mineral salts.

The soil and its particular micro-climate are very important for the quality of the wine, which with the work in the cellar and the passion of the producer produces a unique wine.

The 2016 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino has been called a 5-star vintage and a 99-point vintage. Radiance personified, it is avintage where temperatures, sun, and rain came together perfectly, and it shows in this wine.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market."

This is a Brunello Riserva, which means that the wine has been aged for an extra period of time prior to release. This amazing 2016 Poggio Nardone was aged for 4 years in French oak barrels. The result is an amazingly deep, powerful, and structured Brunello.

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Intoxicating perfumed nose that is wildly enticing. Revel in the depth of flavors that carry through in the mouth. Lovely Sangiovese Grosso that is already delicious and will age gracefully to 2034+. Decant for 1 hour if drinking prior to 2025.

Reviews

Pulling yourself away from the bouquet of the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is an exercise in futility. It’s both sweet and savory, yet also packed full of intense mineral and spice tones. Crushed ashen stone combines with cinnamon, cloves, yellow curry and sage before a vivid note of wild strawberry emerges. It's silky and polished in feel, lifted by vibrant acidity, with an energetic display of tart cherries and exotic spices that seem to travel directly from the nose to the palate. Its tannins are prominent yet rounded, perfectly framing the otherwise heady expression, as balsamic and inner earth tones fade. The Riserva refines for 48 months in 50O-liter tonneaux, of which 25% is new, but the integration is spot on. The 2016 is a showstopper and the best wine l've yet to taste from Tiziano Ciacci at Poggio Nardone. ~94+ Vinous Media

Dense and linear red with a compacted palate of dark cherries, walnuts, and cedar that follow through to a full body where acidity and more tannins combine with freshness and energy. Yet still polished and focused. Give this at least three or four years to come together. Better after 2024. ~94 James Suckling

The Poggio Nardone 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is spicy and smoky with lots of black fruit and oak intensity. This is one of the biggest wines in this report if you were to judge on aromatic intensity alone. Those smoky tones turn to tar, smoke, and licorice, and the wine shows rich concentration and soft fruit weight on the palate. All that power (and tight tannins) is backed by a relatively moderate 14% alcohol. Only 2,000 bottles were made. ~93 Wine Advocate

Open on the nose showing notes of dried prunes, toasted pine-nuts, pine needles and wilted white flowers. Medium to full bodied, slightly dry tannins and a finale of medium length. Better from 2023. ~91 Points, WinesCritic.com
