About the Wine

Poggio San Polo was established in 2005. Although their history is brief in the context of Brunello, they have taken the wine scene by storm. Regularly being awarded over 90 points by critics and even achieving a perfect 100 point score. San Polo emphasizes sustainability and is one of two wineries in the world to be certified by CasaClima as sustainable in ecology, agriculture, and business. With the help of organically grown grapes, San Polo is able to achieve an extremely pure Sangiovese.

2016 has been a highly anticipated release. The vintage was, in nearly every aspect, perfect. Grapes had a long, warm growing season that allowed not only for full ripeness but enough time on the vine to mature the aromatic complexity that is showcased in the finished wines.

"If I had to think of one way to universally describe the majority of wines from the 2016 vintage, I would offer that they are like a well-muscled black stallion in its prime. They are dark yet radiant, expressive, nearly explosive at times, yet pure, poised, and structured. These are wines that capture your imagination; and no matter how youthfully tense they are today, you simply can’t help but revisit a glass over and over again; because in many cases, the aromatics alone are intoxicating. I frankly cannot remember the last time I tasted young wines from Montalcino that possessed such symmetry from start to finish. The best part is that this success was widely spread throughout the region"~Vinous Media, 2016 Brunello di Montalcino report

Aging: 30 Months in various sized oak casks

Tasting Notes: Intense and bright ruby red with garnet highlights, this wine reveals typical aromas of violets and small red berries. There is a distinctive aroma of woodland undergrowth, aromatic wood, and a light note of vanilla and preserved fruit, followed by subtle nuances of coffee. The nose is intense, persistent, broad, and ethereal.

Reviews

A rich, layered red with blackberry and chocolate, as well as cured-meat and wet-earth undertones. It’s full-bodied with depth, intensity and focus. Lovely, velvety tannins and a long, creamy-textured mouth feel. Generous finish with tension. Better than 2015. Try after 2024. ~97 James Suckling

The San Polo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino brings forth dark fruit, cherry, spice, integrated oak tones and balsam herb. This is a round and lightly textured Sangiovese with a long and polished finish. In fact, the mouthfeel delivers more in terms of length and persistence than it does density or richness. It offers a silky, almost glossy disposition that is colored by dried raspberry, wild cherry and blue flower. This wine represents a selection of the best fruit from across various parcels farmed by this estate. Production is 30,000 bottles. ~93 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is highly aromatic with sweet cherry fruit, aniseed, fresh flowers, and tomato leaf. The palate is brisk with fresh tea leaf, orange zest, and tart raspberry. It is medium-bodied with a drying tannic structure. Approachable and polished, you should feel welcome to open this now or over the next 10-15 years. 2021-2035 ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
