About the Wine

Elvio Cogno wines are of the highest caliber produced in Langhe. They are well-known and consistently well received by critics both in Europe and the United States. Antonio Galloni, founder of Vinous Media, states, “the truth is that all of the wines in the estate’s lineup are fabulous from top to bottom… Elvio Cogno (is) one of Barolo’s leading estates.”

Elvio Cogno has been named “Winery of the Year” by Wine & Spirits Magazine for four of the past six years. Jancis Robinson characterizes the 2006 Vigna Elena Riserva as having “near-perfect balance.” The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner describes the wine as “truly stunning.”

Elvio Cogno has been producing wines for fourth generations. Winemaker Valtor Frissore describes his wines as “precise and pure,” and maintains they are meant to evoke emotions to be remembered and a sense of place, born of this remarkable site.

Like many Barolo producers, their winemaking adventure began with the idea of making “simple” wines to offer in their restaurant Ristorante dell'Angelo in La Morra.Their wines were an instant hit among the many patrons and became the talk of the town. Today, Elvio Cogno produces benchmark wines that reflect the potential and power of the Langhe area.

Elvio Cogno owns vineyards on one of the most up & coming Cru's in Barolo, Ravera. With calcareous clay-based soils rich in iron and a southwest exposure the Ravera vineyard produces rich & savory wines that can last a lifetime. The 'Cascina Nuova' bottling comes from the younger vines from the estate's prized vineyards.

The 2015 vintage included a cold and snowy winter then welcomed a warm and dry spring, which allowed an even budding. Summer saw warm days with some rainfall followed by a very dry end of the season. The beginning of fall was dry and cool creating optimal conditions for the phenolic ripening for the Nebbiolo grapes. The warm and dry weather during harvest ensured the grapes were evenly ripe and perfectly healthy.

Aging: 2 years in large oak barrels, followed by 6 months in bottle.

Tasting Notes:100% Nebbiolo. A wine made to satisfy the curiosity of consumers who are keen to have a more immediate understanding of Barolo. This wine is a bright garnet red in color with orange tints. Pleasing and immediate; it offers scents of flowers and light, delicate spices. The bouquet is agreeably rounded, with just the right balance between pleasantness and elegance. The aftertaste is very harmonious with a long, mineral, aromatic finish. Serve with hearty meat dishes such as braised and roast beef, game, aged cheeses, or even—why not? — from first course to last.

Reviews

Entrancingly deep, red and blue-rose aromas here with an ethereal, dried-leaf and herb edge and pristine red cherries. The palate has very impressive, fine, and tight tannins and a fresh, pure core of red-cherry and plum flavor. Impeccably focused finish. Try from 2023.~95 James Suckling

The 2015 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a dark and concentrated expression that offers succulence and richness with a full load of ripe summer plum and blackberry. There is softness here with black and purple fruit, natural rubber, and savory spice.Pair this wine with a hearty beef en route and roasted vegetables. ~93 Wine Advocate

A supple texture and harmony are the hallmarks of this alluring red, setting you up for pure flavors of cherry, raspberry, licorice, mint, and tobacco.A solid backbone of tannins provides support. This should develop nicely over the medium term. Best from 2021 through 2033. ~93 Wine Spectator

Aromas of rose, red berry, and wild herbs are front and center on this fresh, refined red.On the bright palate, taut, polished tannins and good acidity accompany juicy raspberry, white pepper, and star anise. Drink 2020–2025. ~93 Wine Enthusiast
