About the Wine

Bob Lindquist is a pioneer in Santa Barbara winemaking. He planted some of the first cool-climate Syrah in California at the Bien Nacido vineyard in 1997. He became known as one of founding Rhone Rangers, demonstrating that Rhone varietals could succeed in California.

"Qupe" is a Chumash Native American word for poppy, the California state flower often found in the area. The Bien Nacido vineyard translates to "of good birth" and is part of a larger parcel, associated with an original California land grant. Given the vineyard's east-west exposition, the cool air from the Pacific Ocean flows into the Santa Maria valley and creates a perfect, natural air conditioning that keeps nights and mornings cool and the days warm. For this reason, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reign supreme here. And, as Bob discovered, so too does Syrah.

This is a late harvest wine from a biodynamic vineyard. This is a 375ml bottle.

Reviews

Bob Lindquist is almost certainly the only vintner in America that is drying Marsanne on straw mats to make a dessert wine. The result is aromas of Asian pear, white peach, baked apple, and baking spice, more fresh rather than sweet. It is viscous on the sip, and the sweetness steadily grows on the palate, offering cotton candy flavors. Fascinating stuff. ~91 Wine Enthusiast

The 2013 Marsanne Doux Sawyer Lindquist Valley is an excellent choice for readers who appreciate more delicate, airy dessert wines. Hints of apricot jam, orange peel, and mint blossom nicely through to the weightless, perfumed finish. The 2013 is very much built on restraint, yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. ~90 Vinous Media
