About the Wine

In 1994, Gaja acquired its first property in Toscana, 40 acres from the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino. A couple years later, he acquired 250 acres in Bolgheri. This wine is a Bordeaux blend from the coastal area in western Tuscany. The wine is modern with a healthy dose of oak, vanilla, and layered with herbs and a long finish. It's stunning now, and will continue to unfold over the next 10 years. The wine is ideal with grilled meats.

About the Winery

The Gaja family landed in Piemonte from Spain in the 17th century. Following WWII, Giovanni Gaja acquired large vineyard holdings in the area. His son, Angelo, is considered one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in Italy. After studying wine in Montpellier, he was one of the first to bring French techniques such as barrique barrel ageing, malolactic fermentation, and modern technical innovations. Yet, he continued to implement extended macerations following fermentation. By raising the level and recognition of Nebbiolo, Angelo Gaja has been commended by every major wine publication in the world and acknowledged as an innovator. Today, his two daughters Gaia and Rossana manage the extensive land holdings and global distribution of this important brand.

Reviews

This is the second year that this wine is a DOC (In 2011, Magari was still an IGT Toscana). The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Magari is a gorgeous wine that shows that signature touch that only Angelo Gaja can deliver. The overall effect is thick, delicious and enduring. The blend is Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc so you get those upfront aromas of cherry compote with firm tannins at the back. The 2013 vintage shows superior harmony and complexity. ~94pts, WA

A solid red with silky and polished tannins, pretty blackberry fruit and hints of wood. Full body, fine tannins and a savory finish. Racy and transparent in style. Bordeaux blend. Better in 2017.~ 93pts JS
