About the Wine

Poggio Antico was founded in 1976 and consiss of 50 clay, calcareous acres of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate has seen phenomenal growth, going from 50 to the present 80 acres under vine, developing two parallel Brunello worlds – the more traditional, larger-barrel Brunello, aged longer in Slavonian oak, and the modern, finesse-driven Altero, aged in tonneaux of French oak; securing a stellar position in the global market and extending and upgrading the facility to ultrahigh-tech standards. Poggio Antico recently lead a soil survey to approach the plot-by-plot management which started with the 2018 vintage by identifying, and consequently harvesting and fermenting separately, the micro terroirs inside each vineyard. All of the estate is currently under organic conversion and a renovation of the cellar and of the hospitality center are part of the new plans

Poggio Antico rests on the highest vineyards of the entire denomination south of the famous village of Montalcino, atop a stunning hill surrounded by forest that expresses the incredible terroir of the region. A UNESCO world heritage site since 2004 internationally recognized for its rich culture and the quality wines such as “Brunello” which has become much more than a symbol for Italian wines.

Wines in Montalcino follow the strictest regulations; wines must be 100% Sangiovese and undergo five years of aging two within in oak before being sold. These wines undergo aging in large Slavonian casks, giving brightness to the fruit and lovely aromas, structure, and complexity; they are an excellent classic for Brunello Di Montalcino.

Poggio Antico is a certified-organic winery starting with the 2020 vintage. During the past year, the winery has gone through several modifications to include more cement and steel vats in the fermentation area to pursue smaller batch vinification from determined vineyards.

The winery has expanding plans, and they are making a significant effort to plant two new hectares of vines in the prestigious Poggi area. Where soils tend to be a bit lighter and rockier with galestro and limestone albrese, which gives a much more delicate approach to the wines, on top of that, some new plantings in the area make IGT wines (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon); replating will last until 2026.

Aging: 30 months in 40 hl traditional Slavonian oak casks

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Powerful, big, round, extremely elegant. Great balance, velvety, silky, and sweet tannins. Persistent finish and fantastic aging potential. This wine is perfect to pair it with dishes that have sauces and condiments rich in spices and herbs, for example, a stuffed turkey dish with prunes or truffle. Fantastic for a rich steak like a “Chianina” rich in umami flavors. Cheeses like parmigiano reggiano, pecorino o provolone del Monaco. Rich creamy risottos with lamb, sausage ragout, and liver.

Reviews

Classic Sangiovese aromas of underbrush, wild berry, and new leather mingle with whiffs of camphor. Supremely elegant, the focused palate shows precision and great energy, featuring juicy red cherry, pomegranate, white pepper, and black tea set against chiseled, refined tannins. Vibrant acidity keeps it balanced while a salty mineral note lingers on the close. Fantastic showing. Drink 2026–2041. ~96 Wine Enthusiast

The devastating power fills the glass with dark notes reminiscent of wild violet, sweet licorice, juniper berries, sour cherries in alcohol, and wet earth. Full body, incredibly silky tannins that on the palate give a caress and an iconic finish that perfectly combines the power of volume with vertical progression. An exciting wine. Better from 2022. ~96 Raffaele Vecchione

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pure and classic expression of the vintage with bright fruit tones, wild cherry, toasted nut, blue flower, and forest floor. Whereas the other wines in the Poggio Antico portfolio undergo aging in smaller tonneaux, this wine is aged in large Slavonian casks instead. You taste the lift and brightness of the fruit, and it's all quite lovely. Grapes are sourced across a 13-hectare site at a very high 500 meters in elevation. The name of this area is I Poggi, and the soils here are a bit lighter and rockier with both schistous galestro and limestone alberese. I love the delicate approach here, the intensity of those floral aromas, and the silky nature of the mouthfeel. Some 34,000 bottles will be released in January 2021. This classic Brunello really stands out. ~95+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is so aromatic and floral with cedar, dried roses, and black cherries. It’s full-bodied, yet so refined and tight with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Tight and focused. Needs time to open, but shows beautiful finesse and focus. Drink after 2024. ~95 James Suckling

Ripe, sweet plum, cherry, and blackberry flavors are complemented by iron and tobacco accents in this suave red. Shows fine balance and texture, with well-integrated tannins and acidity and a long, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2024 through 2047. 3,000 cases made, 500 cases imported. ~94 Wine Spectator
