About the Wine

Verdicchio is one of the two most important white grapes in the Le Marche area, and Castelli di Jesi is one of the oldest, well-known appellations of this charming Italian wine region.

"Verdicchio" means "Little Green One", and this white grape, which dates from the 5th century, is responsible for producing lovely and refreshing wines with crisp acidity and captivating floral and fruity aromas. The property of Pievalta is more than 17 acres, of which 12 of them are planted with vineyards. Since its inception, this winery has had a responsible and sustainable approach, the vineyards are managed in an organic and biodynamic way, using exclusively natural plant preparations to nourish the soil. In 2005 they became the first winery in the Le Marche region to be certified Biodynamic.

“We don't transform the grape into wine, but we accompany it in its making, always taking a step back as not to break the harmony of the place with our intervention, but on the contrary, leave it to express itself freely, at first to the sight of those who cross over these hills, and then to the taste of those who savor it in the glass. " Alessandro Fenino.

Alessandro is a proud winemaker and the director of Pievalta, together with the agronomist Pierluigi Donna and the winemaker Sergio Paolucci, he has achieved extraordinary praiseworthy wines.

2016 Pievalta 'San Paolo' Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Classico DOCG received the “Wine of the Month” award by Gambero Rosso, one of the most important gastronomic magazines in all of Italy: “Last month we had the chance to taste again the 2016 Riserva, which is simply singing at this time, the wine is wonderful!”

Tasting Notes: 100% Verdicchio. Straw yellow with golden reflections, the nose has typical almond memories and vivid varietal hints ranging from hay to anise, to white fruit. It moves with agility, fusing the cool fabric with the sturdy structure. The palate is composed of a marked sapidity. Pair this wine with grilled vegetables, fish, white meats.

Reviews

“Aromas of chamomile, ripe orchard fruit, chestnut honey, and hazelnut shape the nose. The aromas carry over to the medium-bodied palate along with mature yellow apple, marzipan, and citrus. It closes on a mineral note.” ~90 Points, Wine Enthusiast.

San Paolo Riserva is well known for its restraint. In 2020, a generous vintage, it persists on a lime peel character, with sage, spring flower freshness and assertive youthfulness. Bone-dry on the attack, with firm acidity as expected from a great Verdicchio, it's then tightly woven with fruit in a chalky, mineral finish. This is a wine you have to wait for, which I like! ~94 Decanter (v.2020)

Bright, medium deep yellow; aromas of green apples, golden poppy, almond and a hint of tea leaf. Medium-full with impressive concentration, there is good acidity, excellent persistence, notable harmony and very good persistence; this from a very warm growing season. There is beautiful structure as well as substantial varietal character. Enjoy now or over the next several years; this would be excellent paired with river fish. ~93 Forbes (v.2017)
