About the Wine

Hanzell has a long-standing history of producing high-quality wine in California. The winery is more than just focused on producing wine, they are focused on producing great wine in a sustainable and biocentric method. Other than a vineyard, the estate is home to an orchard and a plethora of farm animals. When possible, biodynamic techniques are applied to the viticulture, and anything coming from offsite is certified organic. The resulting wine is nothing short of faboulus! 

Ambassador James D. Zellerbach founded Hanzell Vineyards in 1953 with a vision to create wines that could compete on the world stage.  Named after his wife Hana, Hanzell sits at the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain range overlooking the southwestern end of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay.  After extensive time spent in Burgundy, Zellerbach returned inspired and educated by the region’s wines and grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  He then planted these two varieties at a time when there were less than a few hundred acres of each planted in North America.

The 2019 growing season was rewarding across Sonoma County. January through March brought very welcomed, ample rains intermixed with well-timed sunny days. Warm summer days and cool nights allowed for even ripening, which rewarded us with truly outstanding, balanced and flavorful fruit.

Aging: 9 Months in 10% new French oak barrels

Tasting Notes: 100% Pinot Noir. Gorgeous red fruit aromas of pomegranate, cherry and cranberry coalesce with herbal scents of sage and pipe tobacco, reminiscent of a briar patch. Plush and soft on entry, gaining energy and structure with fine, mouth-coating tannins on the mid-palate. The flavors of pomegranate, cola, orange peel and herbs are long and layered. Lovely to enjoy now, the 2019 Sebella Pinot Noir will gain in polish and complexity with mid-term cellaring
