About the Wine

Tucked away somewhere between Rome and Florence, Valdipiatta sits in the heart of Tuscany. Montepulciano lies just over 20 miles east of Montalcino and provides wines that are very near, and of the same caliber. Wines from Montepulciano typically show a rustic side to Sangiovese that one would expect from the countryside of Tuscany. With Bordeaux-raised winemakers Yves Glories and Eric Boissenot (Latour, Lafite, Mouton) consulting, Valdipiatta is able to provide wines of rusticity and extreme polish simultaneously. This wine is sure to impress even the most die-hard Brunello fans.

Valdipiatta was founded in 1973, but it was not until Giulio Caporali purchased the property in 1990 that it began to earn a reputation for producing some of the finest Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Through vision, determination, and much hard work, Giulio transformed a small Tuscan farmhouse and its vineyard into a modern and successful winery.  The Valdipiatta vineyards have become an oasis of biodiversity. Wild plants co-exist with plants Miriam and Giulio Caporali sow each autumn between the vine rows. Over the years Tenuta Valdipiatta has taken important steps toward sustainable agriculture and in 2018 the Winery achieved EU organic certification by obtaining the Marchio Comunitario BIO

Aging: A blend of 95% Sangiovese (called Prugnolo Gentile in Montepulciano) and 5% Canaiolo Nero, the grapes for this wine are hand-harvested in late September.  The wine is aged for six months in barriques, followed by an additional 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. The wine then spends an additional 6 months in bottle for extra elegance and finesse.

Tasting Notes: This stunning wine is deep ruby red in color with intense aromas of ripe dark berries and black cherries complemented by subtler notes of spices and tobacco. Lush and velvety on the palate, this wine offers a full-flavored, powerful profile with smooth, polished tannins and bright acidity.

Reviews

Mature plum, chopped herb, and a whiff of truffle lead the nose. The aromas carry over to the ripe palate along with black cherry and a hint of star anise encased in supple tannins. ~90 Wine Enthusiast
