About the Wine

The family history of this Sicilian Estate goes back for more than 5 centuries, where in such a closed and traditional culture, the Planeta family is not afraid to innovate and modernize. Diego Planeta along with other top-notch wine consultants from Italy like Giacomo Tachis, Carlo Corino, Giampaolo Fabris, and Attilio Scienza, have managed to position Planeta as the reference point in Sicilian and Italian winemaking.Discover what makes Planeta one of Sicily's leading producers!

Their vineyards are distributed throughout 5 different regions around Sicily: Menfi, Etna, Vittoria, Noto, and Capo Milazzo, resulting in an incredibly interesting wine portfolio: Different soils, different climates, different grapes, different (and incredible) wines! And if that wasn't enough, the family also owns a hotel and a restaurant in Menfi and Palermo.

The 2016 Nocera comes from the smallest family estate called Baronia, situated on a small and charming peninsula on the northeastern part of the island of Sicily, called Capo Milazzo. Baronia has 8 hectares of vineyards, planted mainly with Nero d'Avola and Nocera, and experimental varieties like Vitraruolo, Lucignola, and Catanese Nera. Soils are alluvial, loose, dark, deep, and with little structure, generally rich in loam. Nocera is a noble Sicilian grape that results in wines with excellent acidity and intense color.

For Planeta, sustainability is of the utmost importance, winemaking practices and viticulture are done in accordance with the environment and society. Baronia is considered a symbol of the sustainable viticulture of Planeta’s Winery.

Tasting Notes:Red Wine. 100% Nocera. Deep and intense ruby red reflections. Aromas of white pepper, geranium and summer fruits, plums, and ripe Noto figs. On the palate, it is soft and persuasive, the typical style of this ancient Sicilian grape variety and definitely to be experienced. Pair this wine with grilled meat.

Reviews

Bright ruby-red. Ripe red cherry aromas and flavors are complicated by botanical herbs and woodsy spices. Big and broad but with polished tannins providing support to the fresh red fruit flavors. Finishes youthfully chewy, long, and refined. A lovely wine, with a spicy note hitting the palate late in the long back end. ~93 Vinous Media

A ripe red that shows hints of dried strawberries and raspberries. Hints of smoke, too. Medium body, soft tannins, and a mineral finish. Drink now. ~91 James Suckling
