About the Wine

àMaurice is a family estate lying at the foot of the stunning Blue Mountains in Walla Walla, WA. Co-founder and winemaker Anna Schafer’s first wine landed on the French Laundry wine list when she was 25 years old. Since then, Anna and her family have orchestrated a coming of age for the 13-acre estate vineyard, maturing and growing production to compete with the best wines in the world. àMaurice wines can be uncovered in the finest restaurants. There are numerous accolades the winery has been received (and will continue to receive) in the national press. In 2020, àMaurice became a “Wineries to Watch” by the Wine & Spirits magazine. You'll want to make sure you keep a bottle of these vibrant and food-friendly wines on hand.

The 2018 àMaurice Cellars Boushey Vineyard is from the Dick Boushey vineyard (Grandview, WA Yakima Valley AVA). It sits at 900 ft. elevation, planted 1980 in sandy loam & Burke series formed in thin loess and flood deposits over a cemented basalt hardpan on a warm southern facing slope with excellent sun exposure.

"Fermenting on the stems adds such an incredible backbone to the already firm tannin that Boushey grows. One cannot use enough stems and honestly if someone was willing to give me their old Boushey stems…we’d throw them in there. The stem tannin is so incredibly delicate and brings a savory note that just cannot be found in the skins alone. Sage, lavender oil, and rosemary are all, in my opinion, extracted from the stems. They are found in volumes from Boushey. It is just a happy wine grown by two of the most conscientious growers in the state, Dick and Luanne Boushey."

Aging: 100% French Oak (10% New) for 4 months.

Tasting Notes: Give lots of air to this wine upon opening, after a minute the wine reveals a strong black currant aroma and a hint of sage. The stem tannin is holding the fruit up well as we put almost 75% whole cluster in the ferment. There is massive mouth tannin and lovely acidity to cut through the fruit. This wine is all about structure and strength. The fermentation tank always smells of fresh-cut pumpkins and here we are tasting it in the finish. The finish is long and the tannin persists until the end. Will drink well for years to come.

Reviews

The 2018 Syrah Boushey Vineyard comes from one of the top sites in the Yakima Valley and was aged a year in neutral oak. It has lots of blue fruits, ground black pepper, and a touch of gamey herbs to go with a medium to full-bodied, pretty, pure, layered style on the palate. It's beautifully done, complex, and will evolve for at least a decade. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck.

A dark-robed syrah, this leads with the variety’s classic cool-weather scents of thyme, olive, clove, and white pepper. The flavors are dark and compelling, with an earthy core of black fruits and suave tannins. For barbecue. ~91 Wine & Spirits
