About the Wine

The Fornace is a small family-owned company that traces its origins to the 18th century. Over time, the family of sharecroppers were able to achieve ownership of this tiny, prized parcel of Sangiovese Grosso. Today it is owned by Fabio Giannetti, Third generation Giannetti, who assumed responsibility for the entire winery in 1994 as a young man. They produce small quantities of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Rosso di Montalcino DOC and, the best vintages of Brunello Riserva DOCG. The vineyards are in the heart of the Montalcino hill at 400 meters above sea level. The name of the winery is derived from an ancient brick-firing furnace unearthed on the property. Each of their wines is taken care of with wisdom and passion that is passed down from generation to generation. This is especially show in the 2015 La Fornace Brunello di Montalcino.

2015 was not only a great year for wine throughout the whole of Europe but it is being called the best vintage ever for Brunello di Montalcino! Now is the time to stock up on 2015 Brunello; these wines will only get more valuable as they continue to age into the sensational wines we know they're going to be!

La Fornace means "the furnace" in Italian. The winery is located on the "hot" face of the hill of Montalcino, ideally suited for fully ripe grape. The winery focuses its expertise by producing only three wines from the singular grape of the region.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello and nobody should miss it. The wines show impressive precision of vivid fruit, fine tannins, and freshness in acidity despite their ripeness and richness which makes them some of the most exciting in years. The growing season in 2015 was impressive. The winter and spring had plenty of rain to make up for the intense sun and heat during the summer. There was some rain in September before the harvest to freshen the vineyards. And as noted before, good vineyard management compensated for the hot weather during the growing season, and sorting out dried grapes at harvest was extremely important for making exceptional wines."

Aging: 36 Months in Large Slavonian Oak Barrels

Tasting Notes: 100% Sangiovese. Dense red color with a bouquet of red cherry, red raspberry, black olive, earth, tobacco, and leather, supple mouthfeel with a medium to full body, supple tannin, and balance on the palate.

Reviews

This is a plusher style of Brunello 2015 with dried cloves, cinnamon, mocha, coffee beans, and dark cherries. Hints of jam. Full-bodied, chewy, and very spicy; the ripe-cassis flavors wash the palate out with unrelenting decadence. Drink from 2026. ~94 James Suckling
