About the Wine

After sampling hundreds of wines from Bordeaux’s 2020 vintage, including Saint-Émilion, Forbes declared the vintage “stellar,” saying the reds “have low-key but silky tannins, excellent (and in many cases, seamless) acidity/tannin/fruit integration, and generally vibrant acidity that shines a lighthouse beam on gorgeously rich, soft and often velvety fruit characteristics.”

The 2020 Tempo d'Angélus from Château d'Angélus reflects that stellar vintage. The Château is a Premier Grand Cru Cassé A estate, promoted to the coveted status in 2012. Wine critics consider the Grand Vin and Second Wines wines from the estate as some of the best wines from Saint-Émilion. Currently owned byStéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the Boüard family name can be traced back to the Saint-Émilion region to 1544.

Tempo is a recent addition to the d'Angélus portfolio, made from grapes grown in vineyard plots Château Angelus acquired in 2017, located on magnificent clay-limestone slopes in the regions of Castillon-la-Bataille, Saint-Magne-de-Castillon, and Sainte-Colombe, just a few kilometers from Saint-Émilion. The vineyard plots are in the process of being converted to organic. The same care that goes into Château d'Angélus’ Grand Vin also goes into Tempo. They describe it as “Bordeaux, developed like a Grand Cru.

Vinified in d'Angélus’ HVE3 certified-Chai Carillon facility,  the wine benefits from the latest technologies and all the know-how of Angelus. Wine Advocate succinctly puts the quality of the accessible wine this way, “Very impressive for this price point!”

Made under the Bordeaux appellation, Tempo offers a more streamlined version of its illustrious elders but shares the same depth and complexity as the Grand Vin and Second Wine without waiting 15 or 20 years to drink.

Tasting Notes: 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Fresh red fruits are enhanced by subtle woody notes: medium-bodied, spicy, fresh, lively acids and polished tannins.

Reviews

A tight, linear red with lots of currants, salt, and cloves on the nose and palate. Really spicy. Medium-bodied with firm, polished tannins, and a flavorful finish. A new wine from the owners of Chateau Angélus, from the area of Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. ~ 92-93 James Suckling

From south-facing holdings in the Castillon-Côtes-de-Bordeaux AOC that are declassified into generic Bordeaux, the 2020 Tempo d'Angélus exhibitsaromas of sweet red berries and cherries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and vibrant palate animated by lively acids and concluding with a chalky finish. 90 Wine Advocate

Coming from the Castillon region and 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Tempo D'Angelus from the team at Angelus offers outstanding quality as well as the pure, balanced, vibrant style of the vintage. Ripe black raspberries, flowers, and lots of salty, mineral-like nuances define the aromatics, and this medium-bodied, elegant 2020 has ripe tannins and a great finish. It will drink well for 8-10 years. ~90 Jeb Dunnuck

Strongly herbal on the nose which also shows soft black fruits. You can smell the limestone aspect, plus pencil lead, graphite, crayon and some green notes. Pure and clean, this has a lovely, bright and really quite marked acidity, vibrant and almost searing on the palate. Spiced and straight, a little bit of bite. Razor-sharp for the moment, a nice coolness to it. I love the straightness, very typical of its terroir. Focused and serious. Still structured, nicely built, a gourmand touch, tannins are integrated, providing support, but still quite a sleek frame in terms of drive from start to finish. Feels serious. ~90 Decanter
