About the wine

Argiolas is the foremost wine estate on the island of Sardinia producing archetypal wines from native varietals. The winery was founded in 1938 by Antonio Argiolas and was the first on the island to pursue quality over quantity. Turriga is the benchmark red wine of Sardinia, conceived by the Argiolas Family and Giacomo Tachis. The impetus was to create a great Sardinian wine capable of long aging using only Sardinian varietals.

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean and lies roughly 190 miles west of Italy's mainland. The vineyards of Argiolas are located in Sardinia in the Trexenta hills just north of the capital of Cagliari. Argiolas farms 600 acres of native Sardinian grapes including Nuragus, Monica, and Cannonau.

A Blend of 85% Cannonau, 5% Malvasia Nera, 5% Carignano, 5% Bovale Sardo.

Tasting Notes:  Upon release, Turriga is densely packed with powerful tannins and tightly wound fruit, thus decanting is recommended. With time in bottle, Turriga reveals multiple layers of Mediterranean herbs, roasted coffee, spices, and licorice with a generous core of black and red fruit.

A lovely, polished red with brambleberry, chocolate, walnut and light-clove undertones. Some dried mushroom. It’s full-bodied with a tight, firm tannin structure and a long, sleek finish. The 2016 Isola dei Nuraghi Turriga is intense, spicy and packed full of tart blackberry and cherry, further complicated by shavings of cedar and animal musk. It’s silky and polished in feel, displaying an unexpected elegance. The dark fruits and exotic spice give way to grippy tannins and minerals toward the close. The palate aches under its youthful tension, with notes of black currants, bitter coffee and tobacco lasting for well over a minute. The 2016 Turriga will need some time in the cellar to show its best, but it will be worth the wait.
