About the Wine

The key to Domaine de Bel-Air's stunning wines lies in the vineyards' impressively steep slopes that allow for optimal sun exposure and ripening. Almost all vineyard work is done by hand. For the past five years, the Domaine has followed integrated vine growing techniques which require a great deal of observation and vine inspection, thus enabling avoidance of systemic treatments. The average vine age in the Beaujolais-Villages is 50 years. Owner Jean-Marc's sustainable approach, meticulous control of the vineyards, and ideal vine maturity are the perfect coalition of elements that allow these wines to capture an otherworldly brilliance.

Located in the historic capital of Beaujolais, Beaujeu, Domaine de Bel-Air has been producing superb Beaujolais since 1840. Today the estate is run by Jean-Marc Lafont, who, since 1992 has used eco-friendly vine techniques (HVE certified) with minimal intervention to produce healthy, natural grapes. Jean-Marc produces impressive well-built fruit-forward wines and deserves to heralded amongst the Beaujolais elite.

The 2019 vintage produced extremely high-quality wine, although the growing season was a chaotic blend of high temperatures and hail storms the grapes that finished ripening on the vine were very good. The 2019 Domaine de Bel-Air Beaujolais Villages is a well-built wine that is ready to drink today and over the next 5 years. This 2019 Beaujolais is a perfect backyard wine best enjoyed while flipping burgers on the grill underneath the warmth of the sun.

Aging: In vats and barrels for 7 months.

Tasting Notes: 100% Gamay. Fleshy and supple, with a lightly tannic structure. Red fruit, mainly black currant and raspberry, aromas are at the front.

Reviews

Lovely red and black-fruit aromas with a pronounced blackcurrant note complement the fullish, but well-proportioned body very nicely and elegant tannins build at the long, well-structured finish. Drink or hold. ~91 James Suckling
