About the wine

“The unique condition of 2020 means it is an exceptional Burgundy vintage. The potential was there to make sublime wines.”

That’s Decanter’s expert opinion, and we agree. What we’re seeing coming from Burgundy from the 2020 vintage is simply beautiful. And this wine, from the small independent producer Domaine Poulleau, full of red fruits and savory herbs, is one of the best from the vintage in this price range.

In 1960, husband and wife team Michel and Jacqueline founded Domaine Poulleau. In 1983, their son Thierry joined them in their winemaking venture. Thierry and his wife Florence are now in charge of the estate’s 8 hectares of 50-year-old vines.

This 100% Burgundy grows in soils of clay, limestone, and marl. It’s harvested manually before aging in oak barrels. This is classic Burgundy from a small, under-the-radar producer that deserves to be above-the radar. Since that isn’t the case yet, this exemplary wine—crafted from minuscule quantities of some of the finest expressions of Pinot Noir in the villages of Volnay, Meursault, and Savigny-lès-Beaune—is an incredible value.

Demand for Burgundy is soaring. Demand for exemplary Burgundy at prices like this is even more so.

Aging: 12 months in French Oak, 100% barrel fermented

Tasting Notes: 100% Pinot Noir. Red currant and cherry fruit, savory herbs, a slight note of straw in the nose. Lots of fruit on the palate, cherry, and currant, tree bark flavors fashioned in an easy, bright, fresh wine; good+ length with soil complexity on the finish. A real overachiever!
