About the Wine

Phrases like “Profoundly Layered Wine”, “Ripe and Exuberant”, “Serious, Powerful Wine”, “Impressive” have been used by some of the most esteemed wine critics like James Suckling and Robert Parker to describe this superb wine.

2017 Zuccardi 'Finca Piedra Infinita' Malbec Argentina is the hidden gem from Zuccardi. This wine comes from Finca Piedra Infinita located in the Paraje de Altamira in La Consulta, where the Zuccardi family is a pioneer; they arrived when there were no other vines planted. Little by little, they have shown through their wines the greatness of Altamira’s terroir. Sebastian Zuccardi says: “We got there by intuition, driven by the landscape. Cultivating this vineyard implies studying, working, knowing each row, each stone. Exploring its enormous diversity to be able to interpret it through wine. An authentic mountain wine ”.

The surname Zuccardi has a well-deserved reputation in the wine industry worldwide. This family is not only responsible for producing some of the best Argentinian wines, but they also have the best wine tourism experience in the entire world: For the third consecutive year, Zuccardi Valle de Uco has been named "The Best Vineyard in the World" by the recognized magazine and digital media company, William Reed Business Medi.

This family business founded by engineer Alberto Zuccardi in 1963, has 6 different estates strategically placed in some of the best wine-growing areas of Mendoza. Today, it is directed by Sebastián Zuccardi, Alberto's grandson.

Sebastián is a visionary and innovative agronomist and winemaker who has made great strides and improvements since he took over the winery. Among other important achievements, he started and promoted a department of research and development that studies the terroir of the region, in order to better understand the land and improve the quality of their wines. Sebastian says: "We don’t look for perfect wines, but those that express the place, the region”.

The winery was built in 2013 and is a tribute to the majestic Andes mountains that surround it. Zuccardi Wines is sustainable in all aspects, from the vineyard to the cellar and even the architecture, where the construction is made with natural elements from the area. The wines are vinified in basins and amphoras allowing a more natural result and with the least possible human intervention.

2017 was a distinguished year for Valle de Uco. It was awarded 92 Points by Wine Spectator: “A return to characteristically dry weather delivers intensely flavored grapes; refined, terroir-driven Malbec-based wines, especially in prime districts in the Uco Valley”.

Tasting Notes: 100% Malbec. Subtil aromas of red fruits, mineral notes of wet stone and graphite, and a very long finish. This is a completely age-worthy wine that pairs incredibly with grilled and roasted red meats.

Reviews

“They use some specific soils for the 2017 Finca Piedra Infinita, up to eight different plots, but not all plots contribute to the wine every vintage; in general, the zones with 20 to 60 centimeters of soil and then large stones with calcium carbonate are reflected in the wines. So, they deconstruct the vineyard, and then they build the blend with the plots they like for each wine, up to eight here but only a specific one for the Supercal and Gravascal. There's a little more ripeness and exuberance here within the general austerity of the whole Piedra Infinita range, especially when compared with the 2018s. They harvested 15 to 20 days earlier than in 2018 (or in 2016) and they had to run, but the separation they have by soil helped them to harvest earlier the earlier-ripening parts of the vineyard. That gave them a great advantage and they produced very good 2017s, but the condition of the year, a shorter cycle and a more hurried year was what it was. This 2017 is not as long as the 2018, and there is a strong chalkiness in the finish. 7,300 bottles were filled in August 2018.” ~98 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.

“This is very intense with blackberry and blueberry character, as well as hot stones and granite. Full body. Chewy tannins fan out across the palate. A serious, powerful wine.Needs at least four or five years to soften. Impressive. Try in 2025.” ~97 Points, James Suckling.

Piedra Infinita is a regular feature on any list of Argentina’s best Malbecs and is well up to scratch in 2017. Made with fruit from eight, particularly stony parcels, it’s a serious, layered, intensely chalky wine that’s both dense and extremely refreshing at the same time.Black fruits, nuanced oak and chiselled acidity combine appealingly on the palate.” ~97 Points, Tim Atkin.

~97 Points, Descorchados.

"A Malbec from Paraje Altamira, the grapes selected from vines growing in eight different types of soil at the Finca Piedra Infinita vineyard before half of them were aged in used barrels for 12 months. The measured nose offers an herb, violet and lavender core from which blackberry subsequently emerges. Makes a big entrance with energy and juice before ceding the impetus to a chalkiness that turns the spotlight on the texture sustained by a flavor-enhancing salinity. A long-lasting, profoundly layered wine.” ~96 Points, Vinous.
