About the Wine

Luciano Sandrone is one of the most iconic producers in Barolo, and he is both a well-known and extraordinary story. Sandrone’s wines straddle the modern and traditional styles of the region: elegant, attractive, and easy to appreciate in their youth, but still possesses the power and structure.

Sandrone focuses on extremely low yields with an obsessive attention to detail to his viticultural standards. Luciano subjects his wines to a shorter maceration period and makes limited use of new oak. The entire range of his limited production wines are jewels of impeccably balanced concentration and precision and have an impressive ability to age for decades. These rare treasures are hard to come by, don't let this be the one that got away.

Tasting notes: Red Wine. 100% Nebbiolo. The 2018 Sandrone Nebbiolo shows penetrating intensity and balanced, mid-weight structure. The cooler conditions of the vintage gave us a focused red fruit nose with notes of licorice, hibiscus, and wet stones. On the palate, the wine evokes raspberry and cherry fruit, wisps of spice and rose petals, held together by a middleweight structure of sweet tannins and fresh acidity. The finish has mineral notes to go with the sweet fruit.

Reviews

The Luciano Sandrone 2018 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore shows a very fruity, fresh, and accessible side of the Nebbiolo grape. This wine is open-knit and inviting with a steady succession of aromas that range from red cherry and plum to rosemary sprig and crushed mineral. On some level, you could call it Barolo Lite, although that does not do justice to the Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero that outperforms year after year. The wine is Barolo-adjacent for sure, but it offers its own bright and distinct personality. It's an exciting, new generation of Nebbiolo. ~94+ Wine Advocate

This floral-scented, red-fruited Nebbiolo is bright and lifted, its flavors of red cherry and raspberry brimming with vibrant acidity. Notes of thyme and mint further enliven the flavors, making it impossible to resist now-but keep a few bottles in the cellar to track its development over the next several years. ~93 Wine & Spirits

Underbrush, blue flower, leather, and dark-spice aromas are front and center on this fragrant red. Elegant and focused, the savory, chiseled palate features juicy red cherry, spiced cranberry, and star anise alongside polished tannins and bright acidity. Drink through 2026. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

A delicious, juicy red with strawberries, light chocolate, and bark. It’s medium-bodied with lovely fruit and a flavorful finish. Serious Nebbiolo. It can age, too. Drink or hold. ~91 James Suckling
