About the Wine

Clandestine Vineyards #1 Grenache is the first offering from the single vineyards project by Vinaceous Wines. Sourced from a vineyard that was planted in 1923 these vines are putting out fruit that is chock full of character. This tiny production red is surprisingly light on its feet and a great wine for just about any day of the week.

Since 2007 Vinaceaous Wines has been making small quantities of high-quality wine from various vineyard sites throughout Australia. With an emphasis on organic techniques in the vineyard and sustainable techniques in the winery, this estate is looking to leave its site better than it found it. The 2016 vintage was the last time this estate was able to make fruit off of this incredible vineyard, so take advantage of what could be your only chance to taste this terroir.

Tasting Notes: 100% Grenache. This wine boasts a bright magenta color with the nose showing spicy red berry fruit with underlying gravelly, loamy characters. The palate is vibrant, revealing cherries and five-spice, but as the wine opens in the glass these develop into darker, wild fruits which dance across the mid-palate. The finish is long with a touch of toasty, soft oak tannin.

Reviews

Sourced from vines planted in 1923 above the town of Clarendon, the 2016 Clandestine Vineyards #1 Grenache aged just six months in old French hogsheads. The result is a strawberry and currant-scented wine with hints of dried spices and earth. It's medium to full-bodied but never seems heavy or rich, instead having a lively, silky feel on the palate and a bright, irrepressibly vibrant finish. Impressive! ~92 Wine Advocate
