About the Wine

***Pre-Arrival Item. ETA: March 28th, 2024***

Gould Campbell is an extremely small, family-owned Port shipper. The company got its start in 1797 by Garret Gould. The family has never owned any of their own vineyards, instead, they rely on their close relationships with farmers of the region. Throughout the 19th century, the company steadily built up its reputation for the quality of its Vintage Port. In 1970, the Symington family, who had been port producers since 1882, acquired the firm. It is therefore one of the few port companies to remain a private, family business thus retaining its individuality and distinctiveness.

One of the great Vintages of the decade, with full-bodied and harmonious wines. The Vintage took place in dry conditions, and it was soon apparent that great wine was being born, due to the intensely fragrant and concentrated musts, and the enormous amount of color visible during fermentation. Over 20 years later this wine is ready to pop open and enjoy on its own or next to your favorite dessert.

Tasting Notes: What was once a concentrated purple color has started to fade into a lightly tawny rim around the darker core. The nose showcases dehydrated dark fruits. On the palate, the tannins have begun to integrate into the wine smoothing this out for its long finish.

Reviews

Rich aromas of plum and fresh stem, with a leafy undertone. Intense strawberry. Full, lightly sweet, chewy and solid. This has grip. Juicy. Lots going on. Youthful and structured. Beautiful. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Best after 2008. 1,100 cases imported. ~91 Wine Spectator
