    About the Wine

The story of Campbell's estate dates back to 1870, when founder John Campbell, a gold mining pioneer, sailed from Scotland to Australia looking for gold. He arrived at Rutherglen in Northeast Victoria, a place with rich amazing soils, and immediately saw this as an opportunity. He purchased 79 acres of land and planted his first vines.

Rutherglen is a historical, picturesque town, approximately 93 miles northeast of Melbourne. The vineyard is located in a magnificent terroir with a unique climate, that during the summer it experiences warm sunny days, and cool nights, and the long and dry fall, allows the grapes to achieve slow ripening and abundant fruit flavors. Perfect place to produce sweet wines. This results in impressive, elegant, and deep sweet wines. Tokay is one of Rutherglen’s best-kept secrets.

After more than 150 years, this winery is still in the hands of the Campbell family. Julie, (the youngest daughter of the fifth generation,) is the winemaker. She says, “Wine is in our blood; we’ve grown up with it. We live it, breathe it, and love it.”Julie works together with her father and uncle Colin (winemaker) and Malcolm (viticulturist). Their tenacity, dedication, and commitment to wine have earned both brothers an “Order of Australian medal”

Since the first grapes were harvested at Rutherglen, wine experts from around the world have been consistently overwhelmed by the unique quality and richness of the area’s fortified wines.

The Campbells Rutherglen Tokay is blended with the previous vintage using the famous Sherry method called Solera. The final blend contains portions of wine from some vintages more than 30 years old.

Tasting Notes: Deep, brilliant old gold. Lifted toffee, honey, and cold tea characters combine to produce the unique character of Rutherglen Topaque. Toffee and tealeaf characters predominate on the front of the palate with a cleansing hint of spirit and old oak on the finish. A heavenly match with honeycomb ice cream, fruit-based desserts, soft cheeses, chilled as an aperitif or as an after-dinner drink with coffee.

Hallmark notes of black tea, fresh hay, dried apricot and a hint of tangerine zest, with gorgeous caramel, roasted almond and honey. A long, lovely wine with a treacly finish. ~95 Decanter

Warm and inviting with its satin-textured grace, this presents fresh scents of apricots and bananas. A powerful dessert wine to serve with bananas Foster. ~92 Wine & Spirits

Even Campbells’ entry-level Tokay is special, offering hints of bergamot, honey, and mushroom on the nose, followed by honey and gentle citrus-marmalade flavors. It’s full and plush, long, and just a little warm on the finish. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
