About the Wine

Biondi-Santi was the first Brunello di Montalcino in history. This iconic wine, which was first produced in 1888, has only been released 40 times. This rare wine is only produced on the VERY BEST vintages.

It is a rare phenomenon that a wine can trace its origins to a single man. Brunello di Montalcino, however, owes its existence to Ferrucio Biondi-Santi and its fame to his family. Now on the seventh generation of winemakers, the Biondi-Santi family continues to produce wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity. Located in the heart of Montalcino, the Tenuta Greppo estate spreads over 60 acres of vines on soils rich in heavy stones and marl – perfect for the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso. Defenders of rich enological heritage, the family continues to employ traditional vinicultural methods that started well over a century ago to highlight the wine’s unique characteristics or tipicitaBiondi-Santi was one of the eleven founding wineries when the DOC was initiated in 1968.

Thanks to the meticulous cultivation and clonal selection of the different generations, the Brunello Biondi-Santi, or BBS11, became an officially recognized and registered clone – the first to be named after a single producer.

~97 Luca Gardini.

Warm and enveloping, it shows a radiant profile rich in red shades reminiscent of hibiscus flowers and pressed geraniums. In the background, the classicism is highlighted in the citrus traits that recall the beauty of the squeezed blood orange juice and the essence of the always elegant blood character. Full body, incredibly velvety tannins and a finish of solid and concrete quality that gives pleasure and induces easy emotions. Drink now or get old. ~95 WinesCritic.com

Medium intense hue with bricking. Extremely refined nose intermixing prune, cherry, Havana and mild spices. Tightly-wound, silky tannins on the palate are lifted by a wave that is full and ethereal yet remarkably fresh. Elegance and delicacy. ~95 Gilbert & Gaillard.

Brightening, bright garnet red. Opened with notes of goji berries, some sealing wax, then lots of sour cherries and raspberries, finely drawn. Very juicy in the approach and course, after raspberries and cherries, opens with present, fine-meshed tannins, fine and interwoven, very long finish. ~95 Falstaff.

A few swirls of the glass release delicate, enticing aromas of red berry, rose, iris, tobacco, new leather and star anise on this elegant, almost ethereal wine. The restrained palate sneaks up at you, offering tart cherry, crushed strawberry, white pepper and a note of black tea alongside a backbone of firm, refined tannins. Still primary and tight, it needs a few more years to fully open up and develop. Drink 2020–2031. ~94 Wine Enthusiast.

Hitting a sweet spot now after 10 years, this red is delicate for the vintage, offering peony, strawberry, cherry, and leather flavors, with accents of mushroom, truffle and wild herbs. Balanced and lingers nicely on the finish. Drink now through 2040. ~94 Wine Spectator.

Franco Biondi Santi passed away in 2013, but his son Jacopo Biondi Santi was already making wine at Il Greppo when the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino was produced. The winemaking approach has not been changed despite the father-to-son transition. This wine shows extra richness and texture with focused fruit aromas that are graceful but also powerful. There are hints of ripe fruit with dried cherry and prune buried deep within the bouquet. In the mouth, this Brunello shows good structure and acidity with a slightly denser feel compared to past vintages. ~93 Robert Parker.

This is so pretty and refined with blackberry, cedar, dried mushroom and plum aromas. Full-bodied and very tight and elegant. Very well done for the vintage. Drink or hold. ~93 James Suckling.
