About the Wine

The origins of Bodegas y Viñedos Gómez Cruzado date back to 1886, when Ángel Gómez de Arteche, a nobleman, decided to start making and bottling his own wine in Haro, the heart of Rioja Alta. Thus, a century-old cellar was born which would go on to make history in Haro and Rioja during the late 19th century. Today the winery is run by David González and Juan Antonio Leza, two young Riojan winemakers and viticulture technicians with over a decade of experience. David and Juan Antonio have been advising the company since 2008 and today it is their primary passion.

Their vineyards consist of small vines of old bush-trained in the most elevated areas of Rioja Alta and Alavesa, where great wines strongly rooted in their terroir can be created. They practice sustainable and thoughtful wine-making. Thus, the wines of Gómez Cruzado are born in the vineyard through a mix of almost a hundred different supervised plots across three well-defined regions.

The 2012 Rioja Reserva comes from 30 year old bush vines located in the Sierra Cantabria foothills and the low course of the Najerilla river. These hand picked grapes spend 18 months in 50% new French and American oak with another 2 years resting in bottle in the cellar of Gomez Cruzado.

Tasting notes: A wonderful bouquet of red cherry, black cherry, licorice, cedar, vanilla, dill and tobacco leaf lift out of the glass. The palate is full, soft tannins intermingle with red fruits wrapped in a blanket of American Oak. This wine is built to last, it will sing to today and continue it's tune for another 10-15 years!
