About the Wine

The Estate was founded in 1972 by James ("Jim") O’Neil Sullivan, a visionary and pioneer of Rutherford, a premier Napa Valley appellation for Cabernet Sauvignon. Jim's passion for creating great wine predated the 1976 Judgement of Paris which famously recognized Napa Valley wines as among the best in the world. These are the wines that make Napa special and one of the most well-acclaimed regions in the world!

Today, Rutherford is home to some of Napa Valley’s most widely recognized names like BV, Cakebread, Caymus, and Staglin to name a few. The Sullivan Estate lies on the east side of Rutherford (right behind Alpha Omega) and spans over 26 acres, mostly dedicated to vines and lush gardens. The vineyard is planted to Bordeaux varietals like Cabernet, Petite Verdot, and Merlot.

Boutique wineries in Napa have developed a cult following, but you don't hear about it all that much unless you're "in the know." These wines rarely make it to the market because they're often sold exclusively to wine club members at the cellar door. Thankfully, we were able to get our hands on a small allocation of this wine to make available just for you. This is your opportunity to discover the enchantment of a boutique Napa winery!

Aging: 21 Months in 61% New French Oak

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, and 2% Petite Verdot. Big and Inviting, the 2016 Coeur de Vigne flashes hints of cedar, Bing cherry,  cocoa powder, and baking spices.  There is a seamless arch to the wine that begins on entry and carries the experience all the way through to the finish.  Velvety tannins are well integrated and sweet ripe plum flavors combine with a savory character to give the wine’s texture weight and density.

Reviews

In the same ballpark, the 2016 Estate Coeur De Vigne checks in as 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot, all of which spent 21 months in 60% new French oak. As with the Cabernet, it has an old school, textbook bouquet of green herbs, ripe tobacco, cedar, and new leather. It has a touch of green, but it’s varietal, not vegetal. More chocolate and black fruits emerge with time in the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a tight, backward vibe on the palate, and outstanding length. ~92+ Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Sullivan Rutherford Estate Coeur de Vigne spins a tale between the Old and New World. TASTING NOTES: This wine is attractive with its showing of savory spices, black fruit, and oak. Pair it with braised meat dishes. ~92 Wilfred Wong
