Right in the heart of Montepulciano lies an oasis for biodiversity. At Il Conventino, the wine has been produced from entirely organic growing techniques with an emphasis on sustaining local fauna through native cover crops for over 30 years. The wine is produced from native varieties to the region with an emphasis on Prugnolo Gentil (local Sangiovese clone), Canaiolo, and Colorino. The wines of this estate always convey a perfect interpretation of Tuscany.
Vino Nobile is at the very top of the hierarchy of wine in Montepulciano. Only made from the most prestigious grapes in the region. Il Conventino takes this top tier to the next level. In the cellar, there is no addition of commercial yeast strains, just those that are natively present on the grapes when they are brought in ferment this wine dry. With minimal intervention during the winemaking process, Il Conventino attempts year in and year out to give the truest expression of the terroir of their vineyards.
Aging: 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels
Tasting Notes: 85% Prugnolo Gentile, 15% Colorino, Canaiolo. With an intense ruby color, this wine offers a wide bouquet of aromas, which varies from fresh fruit in its youth to intriguing balsamic notes over the years. A well-balanced wine with clean and delicate tannins, that linger on the palate.
Aromas of scorched earth, new leather, and roasted nut form the nose along with a whiff of violet. The chewy, savory palate doles out ripe plum, cherry compote, and licorice alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2022–2027. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
