About the Wine
Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, located in Pauillac, is a neighbor to some of the most emblematic Châteaux in the world like Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, and Château Latour.
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is classified as a Second Growth from the 1855 Grand Cru Classification. This is the second wine from the famed estate. Sourced from the same estate from younger vines, the Réserve was created and sold for the first time in 1973 (the label was changed from Reserve de la Comtesse in 2017 and this wine is now named Reserve).
The second wine represents between 20 percent and 50 percent of the total production of the Chateau. From the same soil, the second wine benefits from the technology and reputation of the great wine and is produced by the hands of the same winemaking team. The archives kept at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande mention the existence of a second wine as early as the 19th century.
Like almost all of Pauillac, the terroir is a dream site overlooking the Gironde river. The soils of this 180-acre estate, are composed of quaternary gravel deposits, large pebbles and sand, and an excellent maritime climate.
The average age of the vines is 35 years old.
2019 was an outstanding vintage for Pauillac. It was awarded 97 points by Vinous Media who said it is "Unquestionably a Left Bank vintage. The sweet spot is in Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac, where so many wines are exceptional to profound, at all levels in the hierarchy of terroirs."
Aging: 40% new French oak for 12 months.
Tasting Notes
54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. 4% Cabernet Franc.
Critical Reviews
The wine's richness is paralleled by its generous character and ripe blackberry flavors. Its texture is delicious, balancing structure and vibrant black fruits. Drink from 2025. ~94 Wine Enthusiast
The 2019 Réserve de la Comtesse is elegant, silky and nuanced, with terrific presence and tons of pure class. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, blood orange, rose petal and spice all build with a bit of aeration. I am so impressed with the wine's breadth and textural intensity. The 2019 Réserve is without a doubt one of the best recent editions here. ~94 Vinous Media
A pretty red with blackberry, cherry and currant. Some chocolate and walnut, too. It’s medium-bodied with integrated tannins and a polished finish. Hazelnut at the end. Drink after 2024. ~93 James Suckling
Plenty of tannins that are muscular and dense, clearly signposting a 2nd wine from a high quality estate. Has grip and tension through the palate, with cocoa shavings and fresh acidities. There are black fruits here, a little subdued at the moment, but this is impressive. ~93 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
This is well structured and approaches 2010 in terms of its weight and depth of fruit. Deep spiced damson on the nose, you would be hard pressed not to say that this is as good as very many Cru Bourgeois 1st wines. Huge depth, similar to the 2018 but a little higher acidity, a little less round, a little more classic Pauillac in character. This is confident and serious with lots of tannins. A great 2nd wine, and a reminder of the consistently successful winemaking that is happening at this estate. ~93 Decanter
Bright dark garnet colour with a purple core. Pure nose with elegant dark berry flavours, mild oak and tobacco. The palate is ample and fluid with a soft extraction, chocolate coated dark berry flavours, velvety tannin and a warm long finish. Stylish and well-assembled. ~92 Andreas Larsson Sommelier
~92 Falstaff
The 2019 Resèrve de la Comtesse is striking, soaring from the glass with scents of violets and rose petals mingled with cassis and dark berries. Medium to full-bodied, polished and succulent, it’s lively and seamless, with impressive concentration and a long, penetrating finish. ~91 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Racy and fresh, with a slightly silky edge to the fine-grained structure, this understated wine offers fresh red and black cherry notes mixed with a flash of iron and a nudge of savory hints. Features a singed cedar hint on the finish that stays in the background. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2033. ~91 Wine Spectator
