About the Wine
This isn’t your typical Chianti. While it comes at an everyday price, this wine is aged in amphora, adding complexity and depth that you won’t find in just any bottle. It’s a wine that impresses but is still easy enough to enjoy every day. A true crowd-pleaser, any day of the week.
2021 has been called one of the BEST vintages of the millennium, and it’s one for the ages. Wine Spectator gave it a 98-point review, saying, "The hot summer and later harvest yielded vibrant and focused reds with ripe tannins."
Chianti Montalbano is one of Chianti's seven subzones, located in the rolling hills of Prato, just west of Florence and south of Pistoia. The wines here are known for their freshness, approachability, and balance. With every sip of this outstanding Chianti Montalbano, you’ll be instantly transported to this beautiful part of Tuscany. Harmonious, balanced, and the perfect daily drinker.
And Villa Bibbiani is a true gem in the heart of Tuscany, with over 1300 years of history. Gambero Rosso said it’s “much more than a winery, much more than an estate.” We couldn’t agree more.
The origins of Villa Bibbiani stretch back to the Middle Ages, when the estate belonged to a Benedictine monastery. But its modern history began in the 1700s when it was acquired by the Frescobaldi family—Italian royalty known for founding vineyards and planting the iconic botanical garden (which still thrives today) by Cosimo Ridolfi, the father of modern Italian agriculture.
Today, the estate is owned by a doctor from Houston who sold his San Antonio healthcare group to United Healthcare. He’s spared no expense in upgrading the winery over the past decade, bringing in a young, talented winemaker, and once again, the wines are receiving the critical acclaim they’ve had for centuries.
Leopoldo Morara, Villa Bibbiani’s winemaker, brings expertise from top estates in France, Chile, and New Zealand. He’s been leading the winemaking team since 2018, and his passion for the craft shines through in every bottle. Leopoldo says, “The key to making good wine is maximum respect for the terroir, and we work solely along these lines.”
Villa Bibbiani is in a magical place that’s even been captured in Leonardo da Vinci’s art. Set in the hills of Montalbano, between Capraia and Limite, this sprawling property covers 1,000 acres, including the famous Villa (a 5-star accommodation), botanical gardens, olive orchards, vineyards, and an ancient cellar. The property boasts rich flora, fauna, and biodiversity, making it a truly unique estate.
The vineyards stretch from the slopes of Montalbano Hill to the Church of San Jacopo in Pulignano. They are planted with Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other native grapes, with vines ranging from 20 to 50 years old. This diversity in grape varieties gives the wine complexity and depth that reflect the unique terroir of this extraordinary region.
Villa Bibbiani is the perfect combination of tradition and modernity. The state-of-the-art vinification area and the ancient cellar, paired with Tuscan winemaking tradition, create exceptional wines that are both surprising and unforgettable.
BHW directly imports Villa Bibbiani's wines, offering the lowest price anywhere, available exclusively through Big Hammer Wines.
Aging: 8 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels and a small percentage in French oak barriques, a portion in stainless steel tank and a portion in amphora.
Tasting Notes
90% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo Nero e Colorino. A portion of this wine was aged in a terra cotta amphora which contributes a wonderful mouthfeel and depth, without making the wine heavy or oaky. Harmonious, and balanced, this is a very food friendly wine. The wine has a bright red color and a bouquet of cherry and small red fruits. Soft and enveloping tannins, together with a pleasant freshness, give great elegance to this typical Tuscan wine.

Critical Reviews
~91 Points, Yearbook of "The Best Italian Wines" Luca Maroni
This flavorful red shows raspberries, sour cherries and tomato leaves on the nose, plus hints of candied walnuts. It’s medium-bodied with fine, creamy tannins accompanying the soft fruit. Delicious now. ~90 James Suckling
