2023 Chateau du Tertre Margaux Grand Cru Classé FUTURES 6 x 750ml

About the Wine

The Chateau du Tertre is a thousand-year-old estate whose vineyard, stretching over 52 hectares, remains unchanged since 1855. During the 19th Century, the Chateau de Tertre wines rose to worldwide fame, especially thanks to the 1855 classification which established the Chateau as a Margaux Grand Cru Classe (5th Growth). 1n 1997, a Dutch businessman, Eric Albada Jelgersma bought the estate and invested in the large-scale overall restructuring, thus returning its former noble personality to the Chateau du Tertre.

The lead pencil, blackberries and blackcurrants are very intense on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins and a creamy, refined texture that turns to a medium finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 11% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. ~95-96 JS

As this estate's extensive restructuring begins to come to fruition, the 2023 du Tertre contains fully 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, as replanted parcels begin to be included in the grand vin, complemented by 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot. Offering up aromas of dark berries, licorice, lilac and mint, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a notably concentrated, serious core by this estate's typically charming standards, revealing sweet structuring tannins and a succulent, seamless profile. In short, du Tertre's renaissance continues. ~92-94 RP

The 2023 du Tertre is deep, powerful and resonant right out of the gate. Dark-toned fruit, chocolate, lavender, mocha and dried herbs are broadly sketched. This heady, layered Margaux is certainly not shy. All it could use is a bit more polish in its contours. ~91-93 AG-VM

Smoky red and black fruits, iron, tobacco, and chocolaty notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Du Tertre, a deeply hued Margaux that has a more medium-bodied, supple, elegant profile on the palate. I love its balance, and it has ripe tannins and outstanding length. It has that paradoxical ripe yet lively, fresher style of the vintage and should drink nicely with just a few years of bottle age. ~91-93 JD

The 2023 Château du Tertre is very closed on the nose. Despite coaxing, it only reluctantly offers blackberry, wild hedgerow and cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame the mélange of red and black fruit. Silky in texture, it reveals some powdery dark chocolate notes towards the finish, though it feels short—like a film missing a couple of crucial scenes. Drink this Margaux over the next 15 years. ~88-90 NM-VM
