The Gaia vineyard is located in the far western part of the Sta. Rita Hills. Windswept, sandy loam soils, hilly, and cold, this is considered an exceptional site for Chardonnay. Baked apples and pears in the nose follow through on the palate. The wine suggests a liberal use of French oak, but in fact, it is of one-year old barrels. From a cool climate, wind-swept, hilly vineyard site, the wine has a naturally high acidity. This gives the impression of more oak, and broadens the mouthfeel and lengthens the finish of the wine where layers of vanilla, toast, and nutmeg sing into the finish. Consider this with any food that is prepared with butter. Only 100 cases made.
