This is a true Rhone blend of six grapes from the Demetria vineyard, a biodynamically farmed site north of Los Olivos. Frequently in Cote Rotie, vignerons will coferment white and red wine grapes to raise the acidity, aromas, and add texture to the mid-palate. This wine has touches of Viognier, Marsanne, and Rousanne that confer an intoxicatingly floral nose of lavender, rose, and peach blossom. The wine is boldly layered with enticing layers of spice, smoke, and umami. The Grenache adds texture and body, the Syrah delivers red fruit and velvet, and the Mouvedre brings lingering tannins and a lip-smacking finish. In the European tradition, blends are better, and California wines do achieve elegant intrique.
