Epic 96 Point Vintage: 2018 Château La Création Pomerol

We are always searching for value wines from the world’s best wine regions that don’t drink like value wines. It’s not easy, but we get a lot of satisfaction when we find a wine from a coveted region that’s also affordable. Pomerol is one of those regions. Today, we have what is one of our best Pomerol deals ever.

Two miles from the legendary Château Petrus and 1 mile from Château Le Pin in Pomerol, Château La Creation is a gem in Bordeaux waiting for you to discover its wine. The 94-point2018 Château La Création Pomerol is a perfect blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Franc. The grapes from the Right Bank dance harmoniously together in this wine Vinous Media declares “Just a delicious, elegant Pomerol.” This is a broad-shouldered wine, with a hefty dose of new French oak, which will surely allow it to age for 20+ years.

The Gaye family—well-known for their Châteaux Grand Corbin Manuel in Saint Emilion Grand Cru—purchased the property (formerly known as Tour Robert) in 2012. It’s a beautiful 11-acre estate. The 45-year-old vines are mostly Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the remainder. The terroir of the Château’s vineyards is classic Pomerol, with soils formed of compact, clayey, sandy gravel, and a subsoil of iron-rich clay, commonly known as crasse de fer, Pomerol’s watermark.

The team at La Creation hand-picks the grapes and sorts them twice. The first sorting happens in the vineyards. The next happens at the winery, ensuring each grape that goes into the wine is perfect. The cellar is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Together, the traditional method of harvesting by hand and the modern upgrades to the cellar result in an elegant, classic, superior Pomerol.

2018 was an outstanding 96-point vintage in Pomerol, according to Vinous Media which raved "The 2018 Right Bank wines are opulent, flamboyant reds. It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic.”

This wine is the sum of all those parts—old vines, a skilled Bordeaux family at the helm, excellent terroir, care in the vineyards and the cellar, and an outstanding vintage. Along with gracing it with 94 points, VertdeVin says “The nose is fruity, precise, and offers concentration/intensity.” Wine Enthusiast makes note that it’s “richly fruity and structured,” giving it 93 points. And Wine Spectator declares it’s ready to drink now and will also drink nicely through 2028.

A 2018 Chateau Petrus will set you back over $6,000. A 2018 Château Le Pin is less, but still over $4,000. This 2018 Château La Création Pomerol, grown in the soils so close to those break-the-bank, often once-in-a-lifetime wines, costs just a fraction of those wines. When we say this is one of our best Pomerol deals ever, we truly mean it.
