About the Wine

Chateau L’Evangile is located next door to Chateau La Conseillante, not far from Petrus and only a stones throw from Chateau Cheval Blanc in the south east section of the Pomerol plateau. In fact, only a small, dirt road separates L’Evangile from Saint Emilion.

In the middle of the 18th century the Léglise family from Libourne were actively involved in developing the Pomerol vineyard. At the beginning of the 19th century, the lawyer Isambert acquired and renamed the estate. In 1862, L’Évangile was purchased by Paul Chaperon, whose descendants, the Ducasse family, remained the property’s owners until 1990. Paul Chaperon made the estate renowned, and constructed the L’Évangile building in the Second Empire style.

Since 1990 the property has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Lafite Rothschild. DBR’s initial influence was felt through more stringent selections for the fine wines, and the creation of Blason de L’Évangile as second wine.

2020 was an outstanding year for Bordeaux. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 98-point review and said, "Two thousand-twenty is an exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is exceptionally high among the great wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol."

Aging: 16 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 87% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is deep with garnet reflections.The nose is marked by spicy notes reminiscent of cinnamon and cardamom prolonged by red fruits. A certain vivacity in the mouth emphasizes a fresh fruit, a subtle mix between blackberry and raspberry. The mouth ends with elegant and silky tannins.

In this ripe wine, softness masks some firmer tannins. This second wine has a juicy character that also gives spicy density. It is full and rich, concentrating the black fruits. Drink from 2026. ~92 Wine Enthusiast

The nose is fruity with a nice maturity and a tangy side. We have notes of boysenberries, small juicy and pulpy wild black fruits and more lightly crushed redcurrants associated with a touch of pulpy wild strawberry as well as hints of mineral gravel and graphite. There is a fine, almost ashy note. We also have a discreet hint of Sichuan pepper and violet. The palate is fruity with juiciness and a nice tangy structure. We have minerality, smoothness and a nice pulpy finesse. There is delicacy in the power and a sunny side with notes of juicy and pulpy blackberries, bright wild blackcurrant and more lightly spices, fresh tobacco as well as hints of small tangy wild red fruits, notes of blueberries, licorice and toasted hazelnuts. We also perceive a fine note of violet and vanilla. In the background, we discover roasted berries and a fine soft chocolate on the lingering finish. ~92 VertdeVin

The 2020 Blason de L'Évangile is a plump, juicy wine that very much reflects the extroverted side of the year. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, licorice, cloves and espresso are all dialed up. A racy, extroverted Pomerol, the 2020 Blason is a total pleasure bomb. This is the first time the Blason was partly aged in tank, a decision taken to maintain as much freshness as possible. ~91 Vinous Media
