About the Wine

In 2003 Robert Parker called the Shafer Estate, "one of the world’s greatest wineries." The Shafer family is no stranger to the spotlight, receiving critical praise from wine critics abound. The family has produced Wine Spectators "Wine of the Year" along with being recognized by the James Beard Foundation as "Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year." Through all their success and accolades the Shafer Vineyards has remained one of Napa's premier Family owned and operated Estates. There's no better time than now to discover the magic of family-produced Cabernet from one of Napa's best.

TD-9 is an adventurous red blend that celebrates a bold move. The story behind this wine is from morning commuters' trains in Chicago to teaching himself to drive an old TD-9 tractor in Napa Valley. It is the result of spirit, risk-taking, and determination to make the dream of creating wine at Shafer's Vineyard a reality.

It's important to recognize that Shafer is still a family operation and very much hands-on. The total production at Shafer is significantly less than many of the large, well-known commercial brands. You can taste the difference. Shafer Vineyards is a 30,000-case winery in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District managed by the father and son team of John and Doug Shafer. The Shafer family owns and farms 200 acres of vineyards, sources for Shafer’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec, Merlot, Syrah, and Petite Sirah.

2021 is looking to be a great vintage in Napa Valley. Vinous Media awarded this year a 95-98 point review and said, "is a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that production is down sharply, 30-50% in many cases. The wines have tremendous energy as well as finesse. In tasting, the 2021s show some of the savory intensity of other drought vintages – 2013 and 2014 come to mind – but with more aromatic explosiveness and greater inner sweetness."

Aging: 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec. This vintage of TD-9, with more than 50 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, fills the glass with vivid aromas and flavors of summer berries, black tea, rose petals, lavender, and black cherry. All this juicy radiance is knit together with ripe Napa Valley tannins, offering abundant enjoyment today while promising even more beauty with time in your cellar.
