About the Wine

"The 2015 Blason d'Issan is a superb second wine. Dark, powerful, and enveloping, 2015 has so much to offer in its fleshy, inviting personality. Dark plum, leather, and cedar are some of the many nuances that flesh out this resonant, super-expressive Margaux. I loved it."  ~Vinous Media.

Chateau d’Issan is a classified growth. Designated a Third Growth Classified Châteaux, wines in this category provide an excellent value. The type of value wine lovers and wine collectors dream of.

Château d’Issan has an extensive history in Margaux, certainly claiming one of the oldest estates in the region. The oldest recording of the wine produced here is at the wedding of King Henry II in 1152. It wasn’t until the 17th century that the estate took on its current name coming from a phonetic spelling of d’Essenault, the last name of the owner. D’Essenault was a knight and built his Château fittingly in the image of a castle. Since 1945 the estate has been owned and operated by the Cruse family. There have been extensive renovations and improvements made to the Château since this purchase.

Just to have an idea of the impressive terroir from Château D'Issan, think about this: Château d’Issan is just 1.5 miles away from Chateau Margaux, one of the world’s most lauded wineries that sells for $750-2000/btl.

Blason d'Issan is the second wine from this recognized estate. This Classified Château started producing this amazing value wine in 1995. It's crafted with younger vines from the Margaux appellation. The result is an amazing wine, that shares the same particularities as its older brother, but with a friendlier approach and that's ready to enjoy earlier.

This wine comes from a superb year. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 95-point review, stating that "

Bordeaux enjoyed its strongest vintage in a number of years in 2015." where the "2015s are spectacularly rich, racy wines loaded with personality."

Aging: 14 to 16 months in

35% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Shows a medium crimson color with purple tints. Fresh, floral, perfumed nose. It offers black fruit aromas, like dark plums, blueberries, and blackcurrants. Satin tannins. Supple, mellow, harmonious.

Reviews

This is so delicious now with plum, chocolate, and hazelnut character. Full-bodied, layered, and yummy. Round tannins are so integrated. Really hard not to drink now. So why not? Second wine of Chateau d’Issan. ~93 Points, James Suckling.

The 2015 Blason d'Issan is a superb second wine. Dark, powerful, and enveloping, 2015 has so much to offer in its fleshy, inviting personality. Dark plum, leather, and cedar are some of the many nuances that flesh out this resonant, super-expressive Margaux. I loved it. ~91 Points, Vinous Media.

The 2015 Blason d'Issan is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot cropped at 40 hectoliters per hectare and represents 45% of the total crop. It has a bright, quite vivid bouquet with perfumed dark cherry and blueberry scents, and a hint of pencil lead in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a mineral-driven opening. Harmonious in the mouth and disarmingly silky in texture, do not let its second wine status get in the way of noticing the structure towards the finish. This is a very well-crafted Blason d'Issan that follows their very fine deuxième vins in both 2010 and 2012. ~91 Points, Robert Parker.

Silky tannins and the same richness of fruit that you get in the 2016, maybe not quite as deep and textured. A very good second wine, and one that you could easily drink now, even more so than in 2016. Full of pleasure but also feels like a sophisticated wine with real interest. A slightly hotter finish than the 2016, but the clay in the subsoils at Issan keeps freshness even in hot summers. ~90 Points, Decanter.
