About the Wine

Château Haut-Batailley -where wine-making mastery meets a commitment to nature's harmony. Château Haut-Batailley is a distinguished Fifth Growth estate, (a mere 10 minutes drive from Château Lafite) that started an exciting new chapter under the famous Cazes family. This family is renowned for their famous Lynch-Bages and Ormes de Pez wines - now taking their third winery to new heights.

Pauillac stands out for its exceptional wines, demonstrated by the fact that it houses three of the five Bordeaux First-Growth wines. The wines of the region carry a trademark of rich, full red wines that have some of the most powerful tannic structures in the Medoc region. This also means their wines age incredibly well.

A great example of the impressive producers of the region is Château Haut-Batailley - who saw a massive transition in 2017 under the guidance of the Cazes family. With 19 hectares of untapped land and a focus on honoring Pauillac's legacy, a massive planting program took place, which changed everything for the winery. This planting program doubled the vineyard's size in just three years, which is almost unheard of. While the size of the vineyards changed dramatically, the focus remained on the key players: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

But it's not just about vines and grapes;Château Haut-Batailley's commitment to sustainability and biodiversity is like nothing you’ve experienced. In 2022 alone, they planted over 910 trees and shrubs, representing 14 different varieties. With this, they aimed to greatly increase biodiversity and show their commitment to positive change.

2018 was an amazing year in Bordeaux's Left Bank, Vinous Media, Robert Parker, and Wine Spectator blessed this vintage with a 96-point review. Wine Spectator said the wines show"terrific drive and definition"

Aging: The Wine spent 12 months in oak barrels. Tasting Notes: 59 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 41 % Merlot. The wine’s aromas offer great intensity of cassis, fresh blackberries, raspberries and spice. This intensity follows through on the palate with vibrant red fruit flavors like cherry and raspberry and subtle notes of almonds, with a lingering finish.

Reviews

Some dark berry and mineral character with stones as well.Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Shows structure and style. Second wine of Haut-Batailley. ~95 James Suckling

The nose is aromatic and offers intensity, a fine grain as well as a small sensation of tension. It reveals notes of wild cassis, fresh blackberry and small notes of fresh raspberry associated with touches of spices, bergamot, fresh vanilla, a subtle hint of pepper, fresh nutmeg and a very discreet hint of hazelnut. The palate is fruity, slightly tight, mineral and offers a fine acidulous frame, tension, a beautiful pulpy/ripe fruit and a fine fat. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of bright cherry, pulpy/juicy raspberry and small notes of strawberry associated with small touches of juicy blackberry as well as hints of tonka bean, toasted and a subtle hint of almond. Good length. A very fine hint of chocolate on the persistence. ~93 VertdeVin

Dark ruby, purple reflections with delicate ochre rim. Nose underlaid with fine herbal savouriness, black forest berries and notes of smoky cassis, liquorice and wood.Taut and elegant, fine ripe fruit, black cherry, ripe tannins and long with delicate nougat on the finish. Already accessible and showing some maturity, but still has plenty of ageing potential.~ 93 Falstaff First created in 2017, the Château Haut-Batailley Verso is the new second wine of this estate, which is nowrun by the talented team at Lynch-Bages. The 2018 Château Haut-Batailley Verso has a complex, nuanced, approachable style with classic Pauillac dark fruits, tobacco, lead pencil, and earthy aromas and flavors.Gorgeously fruited, succulent, and seamless, it nevertheless has the balance, structure, and purity to keep for 20 years or more.~92 Jeb Dunnuck
