About the Wine

Tignanello is the original Super Tuscan. This world-renowned wine was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels, the first Italian red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape variety (Cabernet) in the blend, and among the first Italian red wines made in Chianti appellation with no use of white grapes. The wine is only produced in exceptional vintages and it is considered one of the blue chips in all of Italy.

The Antinori family has been committed to the art of winemaking for over six centuries since 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member, of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild.

Tignanello, is produced exclusively from a 140-acre vineyard site at Antinori’s Tignanello estate which is planted between 1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level. Tenuta Tignanello estate is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico appellation. As you can imagine, given the fact that Tignanello is one of the world’s greatest wines, this estate is placed on an extremely blessed terroir, on soft hills with soils deriving from Pliocene marine marls with limestone and shale.

The two most iconic labels from the from the Antinori family are produced from the Tignanello vineyard, Solaia and this amazing Super Tuscan. This vineyard is planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. These two wines are called "among the most influential wines in Italian winemaking history".

Tasting Notes80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello is an intense ruby red in color with purple highlights, with pleasant notes of red fruit and sweet spice on the nose. The palate is fresh and vibrant with supple and balanced tannins. The harmonious finish and aftertaste are long and persistent.

Reviews

Violets and lavender with dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate. Sophisticated nose. Medium-bodied with a fine tannin structure that gives this finesse and beauty. It’s very long and goes on for minutes. Precision. 68% sangiovese with the rest in cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. ~97 James Suckling

The 2020 Tignanello is so primary, so intensely fruit-driven, that it almost tastes like a barrel sample. A burst of red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by hints of blood orange, cinnamon, spice, dried flowers, and mocha develop later. Time in the glass brings out striking dimensions. In 2020, Tignanello is wonderfully sleek and racy, with fine tannins that lie below a core of bright, sculpted fruit. The balance here is just sublime. I can't wait to revisit 2020 with age. "We are gradually increasing the Cabernet Franc in Tignanello to balance the greater richness that today's warmer seasons are giving to our Sangioveses," Antinori CEO Renzo Cotarella told me. ~96 Vinous Media

Newly on the market now, the 2020 Tignanello shows a gorgeous bouquet with an upfront and accessible personality. Right off the bat, you get dark cherry, dried raspberry, spice, toasted almond and citrusy blood orange. The blend is normally 75% to 80% Sangiovese with 7% Cabernet Franc. The grape in between, making up 13% to 18%, is Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage is very pretty and won’t require a long wait. The tannins are sweet and silky. “Tignanello proves itself as a great vineyard site in both the challenging and the classic years,” says Managing Director Renzo Cotarella. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A concentrated red, with black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco and vanilla flavors framed by sweet spices and toast accents. Ends with mouthcoating tannins, yet is pretty well-balanced overall. Alluring and classy. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. ~94 Wine Spectator
