About the Wine

No. 5 Blueline Vineyards is a rare gem in the world of Napa Reds. This extraordinary wine takes the classic flavors of Napa Valley and kicks it up a notch. Crafted with Cabernet, Merlot, and a twist of Zinfandel from one of St. Helena's most prized vineyards, this Proprietary Red is a flavor rollercoaster.

Verdon Estate's roots run deep, with a winemaking tradition spanning over five generations. Their journey led them from their ancestral town of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie in France to the enchanting Napa Valley. The winery pays homage to the Verdon River, which gave birth to their family's existence.

Behind every great wine is a passionate winemaker. And in Verdon’s case, that’s rockstar Kevin Morrisey, with a resume that includes Château Pétrus and Etude Winery, he brings a wealth of expertise to Verdon Estate. He's captivated by mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, and with Verdon Estate, he's committed to delivering high-quality, quintessential Napa Valley wines.

In a market where Napa Valley Reds are increasingly coveted and commanding premium prices, finding an exceptional offering under $30 can seem impossible. However, Verdon Estate Proprietary Red Reserve No. 5 Blueline Vineyards defies the odds, offering a remarkable value. This wine stands out not just for its exceptional flavor, which can compete with renowned wines like Orin Swift and Prisoner, but also for its budget-friendly price.

2021 is looking to be one of the vintages of the decade. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 95-98 point score, and said:"Two thousand twenty-one is a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley. That’s the good news. The not so good news is that production is down sharply, 30-50% in many cases. The wines have tremendous energy as well as finesse. In tasting, the 2021s show some of the savory intensity of other drought vintages – 2013 and 2014 come to mind – but with more aromatic explosiveness and greater inner sweetness."

Aging: in 60% new French Oak for 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel. An architectural beauty, with a broad frame and good grip. Determined tannins show the wine’s youth but can’t mask its luscious quality. An edge of Italian herbs, espresso, and balsamic keeps the tone serious but allows the vibrant red and blue fruit to shine through.

Aromas of cassis, ripe blueberries, dark licorice, sandalwood and ashes with bark undertones. Full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins and succulent fruit. Rich but vivid and flavorful. Attractive now, but better after 2025. ~92 James Suckling

The 2021 Proprietary Red Reserve No. 5 Blueline Vineyards checks in 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, and the rest Merlot that was raised 18 months in 60% new French oak. It s another terrific value from this label that has pure red and black fruits, some chocolaty, spicy oak, medium to full body, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Drink this total charmer over the coming 7-8 years. ~91 Jeb Dunnuck
