About the Wine

One of only 14 Second Growths in the 1855 Grand Cru Classe classification of Bordeaux, Chateau Montrose produces only two wines. The second wine, La Dame de Montrose was created in 1986. The first wine has achieved perfection in recent years as a result of an ongoing improvement from one of France's wealthiest families, the Bouygues, who acquired the historic property in 2006. The iconic Chateau is one of the most visually harmonious and architecturally perfect Chateau anywhere.

The Bouygues brother, who owns Clos Rougeard, the preeminent producer of Cabernet Franc, in Loire Valley, also owns one of the most important companies in France. Bouygues is on the CAC 40 and is an industrial giant in construction, media, telecommunications, and real estate. The estimated $55 million dollar investment over the last decade has brought the Chateau to soaring new heights. It's now often considered at the top of the pyramid among the great second growths and in all of the Medoc.

Since 1815, the iconic chateau has been referred to as the "pink mountain". The winery is now a must-visit for tourists in the area. The polish, decadence, and pleasure of the Montrose wines mirror the investment and perfection of the estate.

Until recently, Montrose only made two wines. It now has added the Tertio. The discriminating reader will know that this tends to confer a very high-quality second wine. Montrose is firing on all cylinders and lovers of Bordeaux and St. Estephe will be lucky to have a few bottles for now and later.

2018 was an epic year for the Left Bank. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 96-point review, stating that "It is a very strong vintage that falls just short of being truly epic

Tasting Notes:  52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Reviews

Extremely perfumed and beautiful with bright, violet, and plum aromas. Full to medium body, very fine and firm tannins, and transparent fruit. Linear and refined with a very long finish. Second wine of Château Montrose. ~93 Points, James Suckling.

A gorgeous second wine, the 2016 La Dame de Montrose is incredibly expressive today. Supple, radiant, and inviting, importantly flat-out delicious. In some moments, La Dame is rather nuanced, while at other times it is a bit more potent. It will be interesting to see what aging in bottle brings, but one thing is certain; the 2016 La Dame is a stellar wine. Don't miss it. ~93 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.

The 2016 Dame de Montrose is also gorgeous, and the second wines of Bordeaux continue to gain in quality. A blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 30% new oak, this beauty has impressive amounts of creme de cassis, graphite, violets, and damp earth that give way to a medium to full-bodied, layered, pure, and seamless beauty that has real class. It’s well worth seeking out and will hopefully help you to keep your hands off the grand vin for at least a few years. ~93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck.

Tannins are very present in this dense wine. But so are vibrant, crisp black-currant flavors and acidity. The combination of tannins and fresh acidity will drive this second wine of Château Montrose forward. Drink from 2023. ~92 Points, Wine Enthusiast.
