Chateau d’Issan is a classified growth. Designated a Third Growth Classified Châteaux, wines in this category provide excellent value. The neighbors of this winery are Chateau Palmer, Chateau Margaux, and Chateau Rauzan-Segla. The type of value wine lovers and wine collectors dream of.

Château d’Issan has an extensive history in Margaux, certainly claiming one of the oldest estates in the region. The oldest recording of the wine produced here is at the wedding of King Henry II in 1152. It wasn’t until the 17th century that the estate took on its current name coming from a phonetic spelling of d’Essenault, the last name of the owner. D’Essenault was a knight and built his Château fittingly in the image of a castle. Since 1945 the estate has been owned and operated by the Cruse family. There have been extensive renovations and improvements made to the Château since this purchase.

Blason d'Issan is the second wine from this highly regarded estate. This Classified Château started producing this amazing value wine in 1995. It's crafted with younger vines from the Margaux appellation. The result is an amazing wine that shares the same vineyard and production methods as its older brother that's ready to enjoy earlier.

Aging: 14 to 16 months in 35% new French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Shows a medium crimson color with purple tints. Fresh, floral, perfumed nose. It offers black fruit aromas, like dark plums, blueberries, and blackcurrants. Satin tannins. Supple, mellow, harmonious.

Starting with the second wine of this terrific estate in Margaux, the 2019 Blason D'Issan reveals a saturated ruby/purple hue as well as a powerful, medium to full-bodied, concentrated style that does beautifully in the vintage. With plenty of cassis and black raspberry fruit and some background oak as well as floral and earthy, cedary notes, it's balanced, with ripe tannins and outstanding length. 89-91+ Jeb Dunnuck

The nose is fruity and offers fleshiness, richness and elegance. There are notes of crushed strawberry, creamy blackcurrant and, to a lesser extent, blueberry, combined with hints of crushed red berries, fine vanilla and a subtle touch of fresh pepper and liquorice. The palate is fruity and offers juiciness, a nice acidic structure, good definition, precision, some tension, energy, a nice acidity of the fruit and finesse in its tannic structure. On the palate this wine expresses notes of pulpy/acidic blackcurrant, tart raspberry and more slightly juicy/acidic berry fruit combined with a touch of cherry and a hint of violet, vanilla and a subtle touch of toastiness. The tannins are soft and smooth. Subtle hints of cocoa on the finish. ~91 Vert de Vin 

The 2019 Blason d'Issan has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with scents of raspberry pie, warm plums and blackcurrant pastilles plus touches of garrique, tobacco leaf and dusty soil with a hint of bay leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing with an approachable, soft texture, filling the mouth with crunchy red and black fruits, finishing with a lively herbal note. ~90 Robert Parker
