About the Wine

Located just south of the Stags Leap District AVA, Grassi Winery stands as a testament to familial love, generations of expertise, and a commitment to producing wines of unparalleled quality.

Founded in 2005 by Mark and Jami Grassi, Grassi Winery is more than just a vineyard—it's a cherished family legacy spanning over two decades. Today, their daughter Cassandra, alongside her husband Miguel Luna, carries on this tradition with pride and finesse. With a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, sparkling and still Ribolla Gialla, and Napa Valley's celebrated Sangiovese, Grassi wines embody elegance, vibrancy, and a true sense of place.

Maayan Koschitzky, the creative force behind Grassi Winery's acclaimed wines, is a renowned winemaker from Israel who has made his mark in California. Since 2017, he has led Grassi with innovation and expertise. In addition to his role at Grassi, Maayan partners with Miguel Luna and Pete Richmond in La Pelle Wines.

With a background crafting wine at prestigious estates like Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle, and serving as director of winemaking for Philippe Melka's Atelier Melka, Maayan's talent is undeniable. Recognized as one of Wine Enthusiast's 40 Under 40 Tastemakers in 2019, Maayan continues to shape the future of California winemaking with his passion and skill.

Miguel Luna is a viticultural virtuoso, Miguel's journey from Mexico to California has been one of dedication and innovation. His expertise includes working at Pahlmeyer, Dana Estates, Atelier Melka, and Bordeaux's Chateau de Fieuzal. With accolades including Wine Enthusiast's Viticulturist of the Year, Miguel's expertise in grape growing is the foundation upon which Grassi Winery thrives. The UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology appointed him to their Viticulture and Enology Executive Leadership Board in 2021.

Situated just south of the Stags Leap District AVA, Grassi Winery's fourteen-acre property boasts a prime location on Soda Canyon Road. The vineyard's ancient riverbed soil, dominated by Coombs gravelly loam, imparts a distinctive character to the grapes, resulting in wines of exceptional concentration and complexity.

Grassi wines have garnered praise from critics worldwide, with Antonio Galloni of Vinous singling them out as one of his "favorite under-the-radar producers in Napa Valley." With multiple ratings of 94 points and higher, Grassi Winery continues to earn acclaim for their commitment to excellence. These exceptional wines are also found at renowned Michelin-starred restaurants, including SingleThread in Sonoma County.

2013 is an epic year in Napa Valley. It was awarded 98+ points by Vinous Media, who said: "A once-in-a-generation, modern-day classic for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Inky, vibrant, and structured, the wines possess remarkable concentration, with bright acidity and powerful tannins to back it all up. This is a vintage where the extremely high level of quality has raised all boats. Simply put, the 2013 Napa Cabernets are some of the most profound, riveting, young wines I have tasted anywhere in the world. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013s are likely to age at a glacial pace."

Aging: 20 months in 100% new oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. A classic full-bodied Cabernet-Sauvignon with fine-grained tannins and lush fruit. The primary flavors on the palate are dark red berries with hints of minerality and mountain herbs. Opaque in color with an elegant but robust aroma of brambleberry, spice, and sage. This is a vibrant wine with a balanced tannin and acid structure, providing the components of great aging potential. A distinct representation of vines grown in the foothills of the Vaca Mountain range in eastern Napa Valley. Enjoy now and over the next 15+ years.

Reviews

Grassi's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva is richer and deeper than the straight Cabernet. Pomegranate, blood orange, mint, new leather, spice and dark cherry flow from this unctuous, deeply expressive Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, the 100% new oak is a bit dominant, but there is no shortage of power. I find a bit better balance in the straight Cabernet. ~93 Vinous Media

This is an upgrade from the already excellent 2012. Lots of graphite, tar and dark berry aromas and flavors. Full body and chewy tannins that are polished and beautiful. Better after 2020. ~93 James Suckling
