Here's the skinny: Philippe Melka is one of the most talented and sought after consultants in Napa. Most of the wines he blesses sell for $150-500+. If you want to taste his handiwork, grab this wine that we scored a deal on.

Much of this Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Caldwell Vineyard (producing wines in the $150+ range) in Coombsville, an area of southeast Napa Valley where soils are characterized by a unique blend of red volcanic soils and clay. The vineyard is planted on a gently sloping plateau, and the comparatively temperate climate of the area, versus the warmer territory up valley, serves to lengthen the growing season. The grapes are allowed to achieve full ripeness without the pressure of heat extremes common in warmer areas, and low vigor soils throughout the vineyard create small, dense clusters. With the addition of vibrant dark fruit from our preferred vineyard sources in St. Helena and on Howell Mountain, the resulting wine is expressive and evocative.

Winemaker Tasting Notes:  "Deep purple in hue, the 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon presents an alluring study of curious contrasts, depth and texture. Aromas of fragrant red and black fruit elicit early inspection, giving way to an inviting mid-palate offering hints of blackberry, dried cranberry, cocoa, spice, and savory, sweet tamarind. Chalky tannins help characterize the wine’s revealing structure that in turn finishes with a pleasing acidity and smooth, soft landing. Lithe, supple and familiar, this pleasing cabernet recalls a fine, favorite broken-in leather jacket..."

Reviews

As for the red wines, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa emerges from four separate sites including the Caldwell Vineyard in Coombsville, as well as lesser-known vineyards such as the Crystal Springs and Heimark sites. It is a blend of 82.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 7.5% Petit Verdot aged in 40% new French oak. The wine has notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco, fruitcake, licorice, red and black currants and Asian spices, followed by an elegant, medium to full-bodied style with impressive purity, texture and length. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.

Owners Larry and Mary Ann Tsai are long-time veterans of the Napa Valley wine scene and produce a bevy of noteworthy wines from vineyards as far-flung as the Sonoma Coast site of Charles Heintz to Cabernet Sauvignons from Howell Mountain, Oakville, Coombsville, and even Pritchard Hill. ~93WA
