About the Winery

Don't think of this as a second wine of the Chateau Haut Batailley, think of it instead as an alternate wine of the estate. This is the perfect chance to introduce yourself to this great estate at a price point that won't break the bank. This wine just hit its drinking window and is ready to prove what it has going for it!

"The vintage is loaded with terrific quality at the top of the pyramid and at the well-known estates, yet also has an incredible number of outstanding wines at just about every price point" ~ Jeb Dunnuck on 2015 Bordeaux Vintage

Château Batailley, a 5th Growth Pauillac of the famed 1855 Classification, is Borie-Manoux’s flagship property. The name is derived from the battle (bataille) that took place during the Hundred Years’ War around 1453, designating where the château and vineyard are today. In this battle, the French reconquered the neighboring Château Latour from the English, a crucial point for ending the 300-year-long reign of the English in Aquitaine.

Aging:  18 Months in 60% 1 year old and 40% new oak

Tasting Notes: 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc. This sits in the glass with a dark ruby hue. On the nose it is bursting with ripe red fruits and just a touch of spicy aromatics. The palate is well balanced with ample structure and a long finish.

Reviews

Some impressive presence and depth to this second wine of Château Batailley. It offers ample oak spices and earthy notes amid aromas of raspberries and red cherry compote. The palate is energetic and nicely arranged with smooth tannins that cast a gently grainy texture through the finish. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 6% cabernet franc amd 1% petit verdot. Try from 2021. ~92 James Suckling

As is often the case with Batailley, this goes fairly large on oak. It's a good second wine, full of mid-palate weight and black fruits, just perhaps a little overly grilled which covers up some of the attractively savoury fruit, but that will settle and there is plenty to enjoy. ~90 Decanter
