About The Wine

"At Giscours, a wine does not live by itself. It is a reflection of the place, its environment, and the people who make it."

Just over 3 miles away from world-renowned Chateau Margaux, is located Chateau Giscours a 3rd Growth Classified Chateaux. The history of this estate dates back nearly 700 years. This is one of the premier estates in Margaux.

It was seized in the French Revolution and sold to Americans before the turn of the 19th century. It then changed hands many times while slowly falling into disrepair. It wasn’t until Nicolas Tari purchased the estate in 1954 that it started to make an upward trend. The real step toward living up to its classification is when Alexander van Beek took over as the managing director. He replanted much of the vineyard with Cabernet Sauvignon and even moved the harvesting back to hand picking. Around the 2000 vintage, this estate really started producing top-tier wines.

Chateau Giscours's terroir is impressive, as you could have imagined, being located in one of the finest terroirs in the Bordeaux region.

Chateau Giscours is a Margaux 3ème Cru Classé with deep historical roots and a renewed sense of purpose. Under technical director Alex van Beek, the estate has been steadily recovering its place among the great Margaux properties — and the 2016 vintage caught it firing on every cylinder. The Albada Jelgersma family (also owners of Caiarossa in Tuscany) brought patient capital and uncompromising standards to the property.

The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is already considered one of the great modern years — classical structure, vibrant acidity, age-worthy tannins. The drinking window is opening now and will stretch comfortably to 2045 and beyond. Decant 60–90 minutes; serve in a Bordeaux glass; reward it with the right meal.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This has attractive, glossy, ripe red-plum and licorice aromas with cedar, flowers and red berries, as well as a stony edge. A very fragrant, cabernet-driven nose. The palate has elegance and grace with sleek and charming, balanced style and a discreet tannin structure that holds the finish long and fresh. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. Try from 2023." ~96 JS

This nearly 200-acre estate lies in the south of the Margaux appellation. The wine is another great success in a series of superb years. It is rich but the structure and finely textured fruit give it style and longevity. Drink the wine from 2026. (RV)" ~96 Wine Enthusiast

Concentrated autumnal fruit offers a hawthorny bramble of blackberry and bilberry. Big-framed, muscular tannins are joined by plenty of acidity - it's very clearly built to last and confident in its ability to reward those with patience. Matured in 50% new oak. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consult. Drinking Window 2026 - 2045." ~94 Decanter

The 2016 Giscours is complex, aromatically intense and beguiling, with myriad layers of flavors that unfold with time in the glass. Black cherry, sage, leather, smoke and menthol add plenty of intrigue, but above all else, it is the wine's balance and sense of harmony that make the deepest impression. Under the leadership of Alexander Van Beek and his team, Giscours has been on a roll over the last few years. The 2016 is another fine vintage. ~94 Vinous Media
