About The Wine

Pope Valley is the Napa most tourists never see. No tasting rooms lining the highway, no tour buses. Just steep limestone hillsides, hot days, cold nights, and some of the most serious small-production farming in the county. That's where Thomas Wargovich planted his vineyard.

Thomas was a cardiac surgeon — and before that, a botany and biology student at West Virginia University. He purchased this 27-acre parcel in Pope Valley in 2001 and spent the next four years fighting through permitting before he could plant a single vine. He also enrolled at Napa Valley College, completed their viticulture and enology program, and eventually landed an internship at O'Shaughnessy Estate on Howell Mountain under winemaker Sean Capiaux. The man does not cut corners. The estate is now a living arboretum alongside the vineyard — over 1,000 trees, including 300+ rare and endangered conifer species, many on the IUCN critical list. He named his winery GRATUS — Latin for gratitude.

Winemaker Robbie Meyer of Peirson Meyer Wines has made Gratus wine since the inaugural 2012 vintage. The program is immaculate: French clonal Cabernet Sauvignon, organically farmed, hand-harvested in the dark morning hours for cold-fruit intake, berry-sorted, cold-soaked up to five days, fermented with rigorous cap management, then moved to approximately 70% new French oak for 22 months with malolactic fermentation in barrel. The 2018 vintage delivered ideal ripening conditions in the Napa hills — long hang time, concentration, and the kind of structure that rewards patience in the cellar.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep opaque ruby-garnet. Aromas of dark blackberry, black cherry, cassis, vanilla, dark chocolate, and pencil shavings. Full-bodied with a firm, structured backbone and well-integrated tannins. Bright acid supports the dense fruit. Long, mineral-laced finish. This wine is built for the cellar and showing well at seven years post-vintage.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Fragrant notes of cedarwood, loamy earth, and dark berry fruit are juicy and laced with ironstone mineral character, framed by sinewy tannins that build with granulation on the fruit-earth-and-Indian-spiced finish. ~ 93 Decanter

THE PRODUCER

Gratus

Gratus Vineyards is a family-owned boutique winery located in Napa Valley’s Pope Valley, where estate vineyards are planted to both Bordeaux and Rhône varieties. Founded by Thomas and Victoria Wargovich, the winery focuses on small-production, estate-grown wines that showcase the region’s mountain-grown fruit, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Sirah, and Rhône-style white blends. Named after the Latin word for “grateful,” Gratus reflects the family’s appreciation for Napa Valley’s land, community, and winemaking tradition.
