About the Wine

Wayra comes from the Quechua dialect “huayra” which means “wind.” This name is an ode to the Mountain winds where this wine is born. “Of an adventurous and romantic spirit. With its warm breath, the messenger of spring melts the snow of the Andes and brings fertility to the crops.”

Wayra is an Argentinian line of wines from the Chilean winery Calyptra. These wines are born in the majestic Andes Mountains range, in the prosperous Argentinian wine region, Uco Valley. These vineyards are naturally irrigated with meltwater coming from the Andes Mountains. This amazing value Malbec will become your new Argentinian go-to!

Calyptra estate is a family-owned boutique winery founded by Dr. José Zarhi, a very successful plastic surgeon who purchased the 150-acre estate in 1989.

Calyptra's philosophy is simple: “To produce unique, authentic, honest wines that reflect the soil, the origin, and the dedication and passion.” They overachieve this mantra by delivering premium wines, that will enchant any wine lover or wine critic. Just to give you an idea of the excellent quality that this winery delivers, these wines have been featured on James Suckling’s “Top Wines” on several occasions.

It was in 2018 when Dr. José expanded his wine business to Argentina, where he joined forces with Fernando Rodríguez Merino to create Calyptra Argentina, located in Tunuyan, the heart of Uco Valley

Bernardo Bossi Bonilla is the mastermind behind these wines. He’s an Uruguayan winemaker who has worked in major Argentinian wineries like Catena Zapata.

The beautiful vineyard (that has the Andes Mountains as their superb landscape,) is placed in sandy loam and alluvial rocks with calcareous soils, which provide minerality and complexity to these wines.  The vineyard is managed under sustainable and organic practices.

2018 was a great year for Valle de Uco, Robert Parker blessed this vintage with a 95-point review, and Wine Spectator stated that "nearly ideal growing conditions deliver well-structured wines that feature fine-grained tannins and ripe fruit flavors."

Aging: 2 to 3 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Malbec.

Reviews

Blueberries, stewed plums, violet essence, and pine needles on the nose. It’s full-bodied with fine tannins and a plush, ripe core of fruit. Drink now. ~91 James Suckling
