About The Wine

Villa Trasqua has been farming Sangiovese in Castellina-in-Chianti for six generations, and this Gran Selezione is the wine they hang their name on. Gran Selezione sits at the top of the Chianti Classico pyramid — stricter sourcing (single-estate fruit only), longer aging (30+ months), and a higher bar than the Riserva tier. Most Gran Selezione bottlings retail at $55–80 a bottle; we're inside that floor by design.

The wine is made by Franco Bernabei — known across Italy as "Signor Sangiovese" and the hand behind some of Tuscany's most acclaimed reds.

Under his guidance, the Dutch Hulsbergen family has run Trasqua organically since 2001, releasing this wine only when it's ready: 30 months of aging before it ever reaches the table. You're not buying a bottle to cellar for a decade. You're buying one that's already done the waiting for you.

The 2019 vintage in Chianti Classico is a benchmark year. Vinous called it 'one of the great vintages of the decade.' Cool spring, dry summer, late even ripening — the recipe for Sangiovese to deliver both structure and aromatic lift. This bottle is what the appellation should taste like.

Deep ruby with light garnet edges. The nose leads with blackcurrant, blueberry, and ripe black cherry, then opens into licorice, black pepper, nutmeg, and hints of coffee and cocoa.

Full and enveloping on the palate, with integrated, velvety tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savory, spice-driven finish.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

A restrained and forthright Chianti Classico with earthy minerality, cherry pits, licorice, smoke and flowers on the nose. Full-bodied with creamy and velvety tannins, elegant integrated acidity and an almost zesty finish. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

Bright ruby red, with subtle brightening on the rim. Aromas of candle wax, rosehip and subtle hints of citrus. Beautiful elegance and finesse on the palate, spreads out beautifully, still has grippy tannins on the finish. ~ 93 Falstaff
