About The Wine

Dievole is one of Chianti Classico's most historically significant estates, with documented references dating to 1090 AD in the comune of Vagliagli, in the Castelnuovo Berardenga sub-zone — the southernmost and warmest sector of the DOCG. After decades of varying ownership, the property was acquired in 2012 by Argentine businessman Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose family portfolio spans Bodegas Caro in Mendoza and several other prominent wine estates worldwide. The investment brought a thoroughgoing renaissance to both the vineyards and the cellar.

The Vigna di Sessina is Dievole's single-vineyard Gran Selezione — the apex tier of Chianti Classico, requiring a minimum of 30 months aging before release. The 2020 is 100% Sangiovese, fermented over 14–15 days in raw concrete tanks of 75 hectoliters at a maximum temperature of 26°C, then aged for at least 24 months in 41-hectoliter untoasted French oak casks, followed by a minimum of 6 months of bottle refinement. The choice of untoasted large-format oak is deliberate — preserving the transparency and site-specificity of the Sangiovese rather than layering on oak character.

The 2020 vintage in Chianti Classico delivered a warm, precise growing season with excellent harvest conditions — resulting in wines of deep concentration, fine-grained tannin, and the bright acidity that is the hallmark of the Castelnuovo Berardenga sub-zone. Production was limited to 750 cases globally, with 225 cases reaching the United States.

100% Sangiovese, fermented in raw concrete and aged 24+ months in untoasted French oak. The nose is vibrant and detailed — cherry, wild strawberry, dried violet, Tuscan scrub, licorice, and a thread of mineral precision running through. On the palate, the wine is silky and crisp at once, with cherry-stone spice, a savory chewiness through the mid-palate, and good underlying ripeness keeping everything in balance. The finish is long, gripping, and mineral-driven, with ample structure for the cellar. Drinkable now, but best from 2026 through 2042.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Vibrant and silky, boasting cherry, strawberry, floral, Tuscan scrub and mineral aromas and flavors. Elegant in profile, with ample structure to allow this red to age. Balanced and remains long and detailed on the gripping finish. ~94 Wine Spectator

A wine focused on spiciness, licorice and cherry stones. Crisp and chewy, with a medium body, savory length and good ripeness overall. ~93 James Suckling
