About the Wine
Planeta is one of the most iconic, and well known producers in Sicily. Fun fact? The winery was even featured in the critically acclaimed TV Show The White Lotus.
Alessio Planeta, head of Planeta, has been named "Winemaker of the Year" worldwide by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine through their "Wine Star Awards" in 2023.
The family history of this Sicilian Estate goes back for more than 5 centuries, where in such a closed and traditional culture, the Planeta family is not afraid to innovate and modernize. Diego Planeta along with other top-notch wine consultants from Italy like Giacomo Tachis, Carlo Corino, Giampaolo Fabris, and Attilio Scienza, have managed to position Planeta as the reference point in Sicilian and Italian winemaking. Discover what makes Planeta one of Sicily's leading producers!
Their vineyards are distributed throughout 5 different regions around Sicily: Menfi, Etna, Vittoria, Noto, and Capo Milazzo, resulting in an incredibly interesting wine portfolio: Different soils, different climates, different grapes, different (and incredible) wines! And if that wasn't enough, the family also owns a hotel and a restaurant in Menfi and Palermo.
For Planeta, sustainability is of the utmost importance, winemaking practices and viticulture are done in accordance with the environment and society. Baronia is considered a symbol of the sustainable viticulture of Planeta’s Winery.
Tasting Notes
85% Nero d’Avola, 15% Merlot. Typical notes of Nero d’Avola from the Noto area like mulberry and plum together with bay, incense and balsamic notes being balanced and made lively by the addition of a vibrant Merlot produced on the same calcareous soils. Harmonic acidity and soft tannins are characterizing the palate.
Critical Reviews
Medium ruby with garnet highlights. Inviting nose, cherry fruit and wild berries, underpinned by spicy notes. The palate has full fruit, dense tannins, mouth-filling, juicy on the lingering finish. ~91 Falstaff
Aromas of baked cherry, mushroom, basil and grated nutmeg. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins. Nicely ripened red fruit on the palate, with subtle savory character. Vanilla finish. Sustainable. Best after 2024. ~90 James Suckling
Fragrant, with floral, spice and mineral accents, this shows a creamy range of plumped cherry and warmed fig fruit flavors that wrap lightly chewy tannins. Fresh, lingering finish. Nero d'Avola and Merlot. Drink now through 2027. 2,167 cases made, 50 cases imported. ~90 Wine Spectator
The nose leads with a balanced blend of vanilla and herbs, then turns slightly sharper, yet stays balanced with aromas of pepper, pencil shavings and black cherries. The tension between fruit and earth continues on the palate, as the cherries soar above vegetal, umami undertones. Acid prances past chewy tannins. ~90 Wine Enthusiast
